Hi just wondering if there is a connection between lupus and autoimmune thyroid disease. Currently my thyroid levels are within normal range. A blood test in my showed tpo over 1000 and a positive ANA. At the moment I am at risk of developing autoimmune thyroid disease so to have 6 monthly thyroid checks. I have symptoms related to thyroid problems but also suspected Lupus. My question is did anyone get diagnosed with lupus then thyoid disease or vice versa?

If you have any autoimmune disease at all then the risk of acquiring or already having another undiagnosed is greater.

I was diagnosed as Hypothyroid (most with Hypothyroidism have Hashimoto’s) many years ago but then along came RA and then I was rediagnosed with Sjögren’s.

As a child I had dry eyes and mouth, alopecia areate, severe eczema and photosensitive rashes. My own theory is that I’ve had Sjögren’s for most of my life and the others then just jumped on the bandwagon!

Many of us with Sjögren’s, Lupus and other rheumatic diseases are also Hypothyroid (Hashimoto’s).

Hi thanks for the reply. I developed a sun allergy a few years ago along with raynaud's too. Just been started on nifedipine. I have been unwell since may with a multiplicy of symptoms. I wider whether the sun allergy was the start of it. As sometimes it can take a while for symptoms to develop. I also have a photosensitive rash on my chest. It's never itchy or sore. Just visually bothersome.

Hi. Yes, your thyroid can be effected by autoimmune disease. If your thyroid antibody is elevated it’s called Hashimoto Disease. Ask your doctor to check your thyroid Antibodies. I have RA, Lupus and Hashimoto disease. Do you experience any Brian fog? If you have never heard of Hashimoto’s, then I would definitely look it up. Of course it’s horrible just like the rest of them!! Best of luck to you and God bless!!

I have heard of hashimoto's. I thought that's what I have due to the high levels of antibodies but the endocrinologist I saw didn't mention it. He suspects lupus instead. I haven't had them re checked so since may last year so not sure if they have gone up again. I am really struggling now with the constant fluctuating in temperature. Is that a sign of hashimoto's? Fluctuating between hypo and hyper?

Yes, I have Hashimoto's....I fluctuate in terms of temperature and drenching cold sweats at night within seconds of falling asleep are also common. I am not sure if i have Lupus, but also have reynauds and the symptoms of Sjorgens

I am still in the process of a lupus diagnosis. Although I read symptoms of hypothyroidism can be similar to that of lupus. Can i ask how your hashimoto's diagnosed and what treatment are you on? I also have reynaud's which is getting worse so I have been prescribed nefedipine

Hi, You can be sub hypothyroid for a very long time feeling very tired and generally unwell for years before you reach a stage (by which time much damage is done) that your blood tests show you have hypothyroidism, and you have whacked on half your bodyweight again. They measure only T4 in this country (UK), and worry mainly about the affects of high "bad" cholesterol than anything else. So mine was diagnosed by blood test, and I had to ask them 2 years later to test for autoimmune antibodies which were very high, my GP is uninterested in them, and autoimmunity in general. I am on 75mg of Levothyroxine and statins to help with the high cholesterol.

I am like that now. So tired everyday and generally unwell. With intermittent flu like symptoms and the heat/cold intolerance. My go only do tsh and t4. How do you get treatment if levels are normal but you have symptoms?

Honestly, it took me 6 years telling them that I was sure I had autoimmune issues and was hypothyroid. They usually only treat once the blood results show them there is an issue. Your best bet is getting a doctor who will listen to you. It's also easier to get treatment if you are child bearing age and thinking of conceiving (my daughter is also hypothyroid)

6 years is such a long time of you're suffering symptoms. My.understanding is hashimotos symptoms are that of an underactive thyoid. I don't have the typical weight gain. I am the opposite. Loss of appetite and weight loss.

Not what you're looking for?
