Invest in olive oil now?

According to Lupus News Today, a recent research paper shows that virgin olive oil may help reduce SLE activity. The study found that lab mice fed with olive oil every day for 6 months showed reduced paw swelling, spleen and thymus weight, urinary protein level, and kidney damage compared to those fed with sunflower oil.

The amounts fed to the mice were said to be equivalent to just 20ml of olive oil per day for a person weighing 70kg.

Too good to be true? Almost certainly. But I'll be sending someone out to clear the shelves at Aldi tomorrow morning ;)

The report is here lupusnewstoday.com/2018/08/...

What are you going to do with it ? I don't fancy just drinking it . A swig of cider vinegar a day is suppose to work wonders for all sorts of things including arthritis x

....you could make a dressing with it.

Juice of 1 lemon ( I use bottled & guess), 1tbs whole grain mustard, 1tbs honey, 3 tbs extra virgin olive oil. Works very well to dress salads or fish dishes.

You could try substituting cider vinegar for the lemon juice & get both in 1 hit!

Connoisseurs drink olive oil straight, like a good wine, or just dunk some fresh bread in it. So I am told x

This, at least, is one where there's no harm in trying. Darn it though! I went to check on my bottle of extra virgin olive oil ( we're sophisticated in Leeds) and nearly dropped the bottle of balsamic vinegar.

I can't eat salad but could use the oil instead of butter on my mushed up veg.

Interesting! I will infuse with turmeric which also apparently is an anti inflammatory

It's only just over a tablespoon - and I use only olive oil to cook (think roast veg as well as anything else) and as salad dressing so get through about double that a week without even trying. And as sarah says - apple vinegar. I also put it on bread - like a lot of my neigbours, no butter put out with the bread at restaurants here ;-)

Yep. I was told to switch to olive oil for my sagging brain - (mediteranian style brain diet) I fry everything with the stuff - and don't hold back on the amounts. Makes 'orrid soggy veggies taste a lot better. I was also recovering from a nasty renal flare when the advice was given. The renal diagnosis was originally grim. Just the other day I told my Kidneys will last me till I'm 100. I still can't believe it. Of course the medications helped - but never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect any nephrologist to ever tell me that.

That's very encouraging, Freckle. I love olives, so it's no hardship for me either. But trust me to come home today with a bumper jar of 'Black Olives in Oil' - only to discover in the small print that they are black olives in *sunflower* oil. Grrrr.....x

😁 Yes...this olive oil business can be tricky. A squillion different sorts - and non sorts 🙃

I fry mine to oblivion - probably changing its optimum composition. I dare say our fellow Lupus mice had to be puratins. I hope they gave them a nice side dish of posh cheese as compensation.

I use olive oil on salads, all my cooking, and sometimes, just take a tablespoon.
