Allergic reaction?

My daughter is 27 and has just been diagnosed with lupus. We have been on strict lupus diet and avoided all diary, wheat eggs etc. She has been having lots of green smoothies, she was doing really well but has just had some sort of allergic reaction on her face-lips and cheeks swelled -not just a rash. Has this happened to others? It has scared her and me!

Hi LupusMum

I have had this too. It sounds like a mild anaphylactic reaction. If indeed it was, when it involves the tongue it can become fatal due to blocking the airway. Was there itching too? It is wise to contact your GP and explain in detail. Make sure you identify the foods eaten before the reaction. And all the symptoms duration etc. so the doctor can advise you what to do.

Thank you. I will contact him. That was my suspicion. I gave her antihistamine at the time. She is sleeping now.

Wise action Mum. Keep an eye on her to make sure she doesn’t have worsening symptoms, especially breathing.

Sending you hugs my prayers.

Thank you. She has stabilised and is now just tired and aching joints (which I fear will be her norm)

I've had swellings of my tongue and lips for around 10 years. There is no trigger. I just feel a mild itch on my tongue or lip and off we go. I've been allergy tested. I'm only allergic to cheap jewellery and cheap perfume 😂😂. It is not an allergic reaction. I suspect it is part of the whole lupus thing. I now take antihistamine wherever I go. I take one when the itch starts and it usually nips it in the bud. I have taken myself off to hospital on a couple of occasions when the tongue swelling hasn't subsided and they've sorted me out fairly quickly. Good luck and make sure you have antihistamines with you at all times x

Please get tested for Alpha Gal tick allergy. I have recently been diagnosed and after being on a strict diet. I feel much better.

Hi LupusMum23, after going through years of being misdiagnosed. I finally have answers after being hospitalized when I had a severe allergic reaction. I tested positive for Alpha Gal tick allergy. Which means that I am allergic to all mammalian meat, by products of,milk, cheeses, etc. I am also allergic to Gelatin which is made from the cartilage of mammalians. My GP had diagnosed me with MCTD when my blood tests came back negative for Lupus. My rhuematolagist did tell me that a lot of people suspected of having Lupus and related disorders could have Alpha Gal tick allergy. Please have your daughter tested.Even if you never seen a tick bite her, sometimes we are bitten and do not know. The tick in question is brown with a white spot on it. Wishing you the best of luck.

It’s probably birch wood allergy.
