Does it help inflammation and joint pain? I started taking turmeric supplements this week. I take 2,000 mg a day. Not noticing any relief, should I increase my dosage?

Thanks!

Hi Hidden ,

There is some evidence to suggest that curcumin (the principal ingredient of turmeric) may help with inflammation and joint pain when combined with standard therapy.

It is however important to discuss complementary therapies and supplements with your doctor because they can potentially have adverse effects or interactions with other treatments.

High doses of turmeric can potentially have a number of adverse effects such as preventing iron absorption, causing GERD, decreasing blood sugar levels, slow blood clotting, make gallbladder problems worse and theoretically it could exacerbate hormone-related conditions (which could include lupus).

The bioavailability (ability for your body to absorb and utilise) of turmeric is quite low and it is suggested that it needs to be taken with fats (many people take with warm milk) or black pepper (either in food or sold as a combined supplement).
