Hi
I have developed cataracts through long term use of steroids. This week I had a letter saying that my cataract surgery had been refused funding and that I can't have them removed. Has anyone else been through anything similar?

Just the opposite really. My GP referred me to our local eye hospital who said that because of my other health issues I would go to the top of the list.6 weeks later I had my first cataract removed and 8 weeks after that my second was taken care of. I now only need 'ready reader's. My GPs view was ' it will cost the NHS a fortune if we let you go blind!'
Can't you appeal?
Hi
Following years of inflammation (uveitis) that resulted in cataracts, I had them removed in both eyes last year. I was referred by my optician. I have always been very shortsighted and have a very good local optician who has looked after my eyes for the past 30 years. He advised when I got my appointment with the hospital that I should make it clear that I was still working (I have just turned 64) and that the cataracts were affecting my driving which was having a negative impact on my job. He advised that one of the criteria they would be looking for was how much impact the cataracts were having on my daily life.
It wasn't all plain sailing because my immune system played merry hell with the healing process but it is wonderful to be able to see properly for the first time in many years.
Is it possible to get another referral? I wonder if there would be a better chance of getting funding after April in the new financial year - the NHS is always trying to balance the budget. If you can appeal or get a re-referral make it very clear that the cataracts are having a significant effect on your health/life/job etc.
Good luck
I am sorry to hear this. I too am developing cararacts because of long term use of steroids because o keratitis sic a, and I have thinning and sscarred corneas. I worry that I won't be able to have them removed because of that reason. Anyone else in the same position?
