Hi sorry I know I keep posting, but this is another photo of my 15 month old. The last pic I posted earlier was taken a week ago.
Does this look like she could have lupus to you?
Scared mummy.

Hi Daisy,
Is there any other rashes in her body?
I wouldn't like to jump into a conclusion and it is true that Lupus doesn't usually develop at such a young age even though it is chronic and you carry it from birth.
Anyone in the family have it? Or any other auto immune related conditions?
There is an awful lot of questions to be asked and tests to be done to ensure it is/isn't lupus and your paediatrician is the best person to guide you.
Regards
Hi Emt1mb, thank you for your reply.
She had a rather extensive rash on her back around 6 months ago that was diagnosed as eczema. It didn't respond to hydrocortisone, but cleared up in a few days after using Aveeno cream.
There is no-one else in the family with the disease or anything like it, as far as I am aware. Certainly not immediate family anyway.
I am so scared. My instinct is telling me that she can't possibly have lupus, but then on the other hand I can't find any other reason for this rash. Unless it is eczema? But she has never had it on her face before. And can eczema manifest itself in this pattern?
There are thousands of potential reasons for a rash, why focus on this rare disease. Go to pediatrician and get referral to dermatologist. My grandchildren had several weird rashes--we worried, too--that came and went over the years. If you are must worry about SLE, consider its much milder cousin, Discoid Lupus, but both these conditions are extremely rare. My dad had discoid all his adult life, and lived a happy and normal life...Dave T (not a doc)
Thank you for your response Dave. I googled rash across bridge of nose and cheeks and got butterfly rash/lupus as the result. I mentioned it to the Dr when I took her to be checked out who agreed it could be a possibility but unlikely. I am such a worrywart and have clung onto this 'possibility' and managed to turn it into the most likely cause myself. I know that is wrong. It's becusee I can't find any literature on the Internet where a child has had this rash but it's been for another reason.
For goodness get yourself and your child to the doctors as quickly as possible insteadof taking photos of her.
My daughter has had eczema since she was six weeks old, she's now 33 years old and still battling with it. It started on her face and looked just like your photo.
Did it Margaret? Did it go across the bridge of her nose like this too? My instinct is saying eczema but my fears are saying lupus.
It started on her nose and spread across her face. I remember it vividly because she was my first baby and I freaked out about it. We ended up with emollients for the bath, moisturisers and creams to try keep it at bay. She also had to wear gloves for bed.
Thank you Margaret. My daughters started on her nose also. Your post is very reassuring, thank you for taking the time to reply to me. We're back at the doctors again on Tuesday, she wants to see if the hydrocortisone has helped (which it hasn't). We have to wait until September to see the specialist.
The only other thing I would ask is does the rash go right into the folds of the nose?
I've had the Lupus rash and my daughter has had the eczema rash and between the two I'd say it looks more like eczema. But you are doing the right thing going to the docs and specialist. Keep your chin up
my mother's descriptions of my infant/toddler onset lupus symptoms only mention rash on my body trunk & arms. and the rash was really really red & nasty. my mother was horrified & terrified (this was in 1953-4ish)
so, am vvvvv much feeling for you, and my instinct tells me all those who are saying probably this is eczema do v much have a point.
and, yes, do see a dr asap
hope you'll let us know how you get on
Thank you barn clown. Isla also had a rash on her trunk about 6 months ago, predominantly on her back. It was diagnosed as eczema. It didn't respond to hydrocortisone but Aveeno cream cleared it in the end. It has flared up slightly since but never as bad as this. I don't know how to add a picture to this message so if I start a separate thread with the pic on, do you mind commenting if it was similar to what you had please?
Would you expect her to have other symptoms if it was lupus? She is her normal energetic and happy self.
i'll watch out for your pic now.
my feeling is that if your dr diagnosed eczema & the aveeno helped clear the rash up, then it is some sort of eczema-type rash & not a simple case of a connective tissue/lupus-type rash.
to explain a bit more:
i only have a mental image of my early rashes, because my mother is an artist & her descriptions very vivid. she was so shocked & traumatised by these rashes on her "perfect child", that even decades later she sees them vividly in her mind's eye. even at her great age, she is very mentally fit with especially good long term visual memory. but of course there are no photographs of my early rashes
she thinks the drs had her use some sort of purple prescription med that was diluted in bath water, which sounds sort of like gentian violet to me...she says that over the years, there was other medication prescribed, but can't recall what
i was in my late 50s & my mother was nearly 90 when she revealed that in the '50s-'70s i'd been diagnosed with lupus as an infant/toddler & teen. this revelation came about because my multisystem symptoms had progressed to the point of diagnosis by a v lupus experienced NHS rheumatologist in 2011. i had left home in the usa at 21 to live & work in the uk, unaware that my constantly dodgy health was anything more than "normal" dodginess.
now my drs tell me that the nhs handled my flares in a reasonable way all those years before this re-diagnosis....there were several emergencies of course. and my drs say the way i conscientiously lifestyle managed my health helped me a lot too. ok, i think, but it was all jolly hard! well, even so, i managed a full life of sorts, i guess. and in a way i'm glad to have been innocent of the lupus diagnosis because the knowledge might have cramped my style even more than just coping with the constant health issues did....
sorry to go on so much about myself, but i am just thinking possibly this sort of thing could be somewhat comforting....to anyone adjusting to the idea of early onset illness
Thank you for your kind message barnclown. Very comforting. It sounds as though you have coped very well and that is inspiring to hear. The fact her back cleared up with Aveeno does make me think maybe it was eczema.
As for her face, we have been out in the garden all day. She had 15 minutes without suncream, then I applied factor 50 for the rest of the day. Her face has not gotten any redder or worse. Is this a good sign? Or would sunblock stop this from happening anyway?
Its natural to worry DaisyF but it does sound like eczma from reading all the replies
My granddaughter had it on her arms, on the inside but it cleared up eventually and hasnt come back, she's 12 now. As a baby she had a reaction to milk and the rash you show is very similar, it reminded me of her rash back then, it was on her face just like that. It disappeared quite quickly and of course she was much younger than your daughter
I get why you're so worried but try not to fear the worst till you've seen the specialist, things are never as bad as they seem xxxx Let us know how she gets on...
Thank you ChrisJ. A few people have commented that it looks like an allergy, but it's been like this for a week now and I haven't introduced anything different?
I am pinning my hopes on it being eczema. After all the replies on here, I am feeling more optimistic I have to say.
You say you haven't introduced anything different Daisy, but how about suncream? My kids both got nasty rashes on their faces to most sun-blocks...
No I use the same sun cream as I always have.
Sometimes young children develop sensitivities to things they have been fine with before, and sometimes companies change their formulations... It might be worth keeping an eye on...
Thank you flow 4.'it certainly does look like an allergy but then again it started as a little spot in the middle of her nose for about 2 weeks before spreading across her face
To me honestly it looks like a teething rash but take her to the docs to check it out
Interesting, as my daughter had a rash like this at about 5 to 6 months, but it is me with the lupus symptoms now, so I wonder if it comes out later in life - hope not for my daughter's sake, but she is very sensitive and had septicaemia at six weeks from the cord at birth and was on intravenous antibiotics for two weeks, then this rash at 5 to 6 months, like I said.
It's me again, the alternative approaches to health would say it is the body getting rid of something when we get rashes, spots and bleeding, etc. Did your daughter have any problems and drugs before this happened as I didn't see your previous posting?
Hi, no previous problems no. She had a rash all across her back about 6 months ago that was diagnosed as eczema. Initially the Dr thought the back rash was scarlatina because she had a throat infection at the time too, but because antibiotics didn't get rid of the rash, it then got diagnosed as eczema.
3 months after the throat infection, she had a period of hair thinning that lasted a few days. It wasn't enough to be noticeable, but I noticed it on my top after having cuddles. The Dr put the hair loss down to a reaction to the throat infection. Now I wonder if it was an early sign of lupus? Other than that, she has had a good few mouth ulcers this week, but she is teething, so I don't know what to think?
Did your daughters rash just disappear in the end?
My Dr said it could be eczema but she wants to rule out lupus due to the presentation of it being like that of a lupus butterfly rash.
Yes, my daughter's rash did go eventually, but she also had rashes over the body, too at the same time.
I had scarlatina just before I got pregnant for my daughter. Eczema, asthma and hay-fever can all be signs of allergies which may point to Lupus or just immune system overload. I suffered hay fever and eczema when young and then asthma was diagnosed in 1994 after courses of antibiotics and a bad reaction to amoxicillin. It is a maze trying to sort it all out!
Glad it went for your daughter. I hope this will disappear too but when I look at her skin, I can't imagine it ever going back to how soft and smooth it used to. It seems to be quite pimply and discoloured. Some of the red bits seem to have gone a tan colour (don't know if hydrocortisone can cause this to happen). Finishing the hydrocortisone tomorrow so going to use nothing but Aveeno on it from then and see what happens. I am also going to stop using baby wipes on her face and see if that helps. Hopefully the Dr may have some answers tomorrow once she's seen it again.
My daughter's face was a real mess and the rash had white pus, too. I thought she would be scarred, but didn't seek help because she had already had antibiotics for the septicaemia. I wanted her body to sort it out if possible with giving her a good diet with lots of fruit and vegetables and it went eventually and she had lovely skin after. My rashes on the other hand have gone tan/brown eventually. I think you are doing the right thing to stop using the baby wipes on her face. I never used them on my daughter's face.
I think that most doctors are aware of the problems with using so many drugs these days, but they have nothing else to offer, sadly.
Hi, I know this is an old
Post, but did you ever figure out this rash? My daughter gets the same one and always after spending time in the sun.
