lupus hereditary ? POLL

Medical experts contradict each other so saying maybe some saying no. I have a sister with SLE and a half sister with SLE (same father) I don't think this is coincidence and would like to ask the members here is they have a sibling or a close relative with SLE or DLE.

Thank You in advance for your reply.

Had SLE for twenty years, my sister was diagnosed with an immune system condition, she is on plaquenil too. Can't be just coincidence.

My mother has RA so autoimmunity is part of my family's genes. And I suspect that it's also partly due to family patterns of behaviour too which causes similar triggers for stress.

I have Lupus (sub phenotype) / UCTD and have been entered in a large genetic screening research programme as there is strong suspicion that there is a genetic predisposition - I think it is Chromosome 7 but don't quote me on that. My father has RA but that is all in my family as far as I am aware.

My mother had SLE, and her 4 sisters had RA, along with her Mother and Father my maternal Grandparents...coincidence, don't you think, I am currently on plaquenil, and undergoing tests for SLE and RA, Drs have diagnosed multiple polyarthritis.

I have had SLE for 26 years. non of my siblings or close relatives have it.

My doctors have told me that autoimmune problems are hereditary but that a trigger is usually involved. Almost everyone through my maternal grandmother's line has an autoimmune disorder of some description including thyroid disorders, pernicious anaemia, coeliac disease, Sjogren's, lupus, transverse myelitis, rheumatoid arthritis, autoimmune hepatitis and probably a host of others. Because there is no such thing as a consultant in autoimmune disorders and because different consultants from different specialisms don't seem to communicate as much as they could, there doesn't seem to be much holistic thinking about autoimmune disorders.

I have been ill with symptoms of SLE for about 20 years and my mum had it too. She was ill in her early 30s but only diagnosed in her late 60s. She also, like me, has thyroid problems. My dad has Reumatoid arthritis so no, I don't think it is a coincidence, it must be hereditary. After all we are a sum of our parents genetic material. My sisters are ok, but my parents had them when they were in their 20s, while they were in their40s when I was born. I think age and the associated deterioation of DNA must be a factor too. :)

Very interesting. I have spoken about this with my consultant who believes it can be hereditary. I believe my daughter has APS possibly not lupus though im still out on that one. She has been to the gp and they did a blood test but I really don't think they have tested for the correct thing. Bless her she now wont try for children again as she has had 3 miscarriages and an ectopic.

my mum has always been poorly over many years but no lupus tests have been done. my twin had lupus both discoid and sle (she passed away in 2004), then I became poorly in 2005 and was diagonosed with sle and fibromyalgia (along with other conditions), my mum had 2 sets of twins ; my brother has ME since age 16 and my sister has sle aswell so I DO believe it runs in families. I have told my lupus specialist about my family history but she wasn't interested.

hugs x

Lupus is driven by genetic factors. If someone/a doctor says it isn't, suggest some reading materials...
