Thank you very much for responding..I really do appreciate all response..I'm a mother of four and this is my fifth pregnancy which wasn't planned.I found out I was pregnant a week after I was diagnosed with lupus and my only worries is if the baby is going to b safe with hyroxdroquine. Iv searched online and found out that it may be passed to the baby through palacenta.. I asked my doctors at hospital for reassurance and the doctors left it up to me weather I would like to take the tablet or not...
Hi, I've had lupus for 4 years and I'm currently trying to get pregnant. I was told hydroxychloroquine is totally fine to take when pregnant so I am continuing to take it but I have had to come off my other medication.
Thanks Lucy..I really do appreciate ur presponse.. I'm going looking into it further and keep you updated..good luck and I pray all goes well for you.. Thanks again
Congratulations on your pregnancy, I also have lupus and was blessed with a healthy baby boy 18months ago. During the entire pregnancy I took hydroxicholoquine and had a trouble free pregnancy. Good luck and best wishes to you and your partner Anniesa

I spoke to a specialist at the hospital in relation to taking tablets whilst pregnant I was informed to reduce my hydrochloroquine from 200mg x 2 a day to just once a day!
Hi... What symptoms are you having? I'm a new lupus sufferer. The Dr diagnosed me after my waters broke after my 4th month. Not sure how the pregnancy is still going on... I've made it to 28 weeks. I'm on aspirin as I'm allergic to so many different medicines and they don't want to try anything while the pregnancy is high risk. But I wanted to know what symptoms you're having and how you're dealing with them?
I'm actually not in the UK at the minute. Was travelling to india when this all happened and have been put on bed rest so feeling quite alone.
Sorry to hear your having a difficult pregnancy and I pray all goes well till labour.
I'm on 200mg hyrodoxchroquine once a day.
I'm around three to four weeks pregnant and experienced anything like this with my other pregnancy as I just got diagnosed.. I used to feel really tried and aches n pains on my joints for good year until 6months aago went to the doctors and they did blood test which showed positive signs for lupus and then I was referred to hospital.doctors at hospital said I'm on the border line and need to b treated.its hard for me and can't without the support of my husband.. I wish u all the Best and take plenty of rest..xx
Have you had heparin shots? also with mine, they gave the baby's steroid injections in the womb 3 of them to aid their growth. My symptoms did not show with the first baby until I was 31 weeks, the second 27 weeks and the third 24 weeks, but I was not diagnosed until the third. My two children are well and one has just had his 15th birthday. Both of my children are strong now and achieving well at school. Keep positive, bed rest is the best thing coupled with medication xx
Does hydroxychloroquine affect fertility or pregnancy?
Hydroxychloroquine is generally considered to be safe in pregnancy. It's usually best to continue taking it to prevent a flare of disease as the benefits of the medication outweigh the possible risks. If you’re planning a family or if you become pregnant while taking hydroxychloroquine, you should discuss this with your doctor as soon as possible.
Does it affect breastfeeding?
You can breastfeed if you’re on hydroxychloroquine. Although the drug may pass into the breast milk, this is not likely to have any effect on the baby. The benefits of continuing to take hydroxychloroquine to control your disease outweigh any risk.
As the other members of the community have already said, Hydroxychloroquine is safe to take during pregnancy and is often advised for most people with lupus. If you'd like more information about lupus and pregnancy, we have a factsheet here - lupusuk.org.uk/images/pdf/7...
If you need more information about lupus, we have a free pack that I would be happy to send you. Just send me a private message or email paul@lupusuk.org.uk with your name and address.
Hi Paul thanks for replying..I really confused weather I should or shouldn't be continue with hydroxychloroquine.. My hospital doctors are not really helpful..I did ask them should I continue and the response I got was "its upto me" which is not really what I want to hear..hope to hear from u..
Thanks to everyone who's replied.I can't tell in words how much I appreciate everyone's response and reassuring it is to know the out of pregnancy was good...you're right the risk of flare up is more greater then the risk of the medication.. Thanks again xx
I have had 3 pregnancy's and I have lupus, I was not diagnosed until the 3rd pregnancy. My first was 2lb 30z,Georgina now 16 - Richard 1lb 15oz who is 15. Unfortunately the 3rd was not good. I was told too late for my 3rd child, but you should be on heperon injections and definitely be taking 1/2 an asprin at least. Please speak with them again and mention the heperon or 1/2 asprin. x wish you the best x
I was pregnant in 2002 and told not to take Hydroxychloroquine because it had been implicated in birth defects. Congrats on your fifth pregnancy! I had seven, which was a monumental health challenge as I suffer with pre-eclampsia too. I would say they have updated their research since I was pregnant, if you are all saying it is ok now. Lupus flares are more likely after delivery, due to a slightly raised natural steroid level during pregnancy (so I am told by a medical professional).
Thanks for replying..I'm 5weeks pregnant and had been taking hyrodxchloquine for passed three weeks and feel I can probably do without it as I don't want to take any risk with the baby..I will be contacting my hospital doctors and see what they have to say..
