Dear janenenis,
I'm not anaemic now but have had to have endoscopy and colonoscopy. Neither are pleasant but at least your doctor is being extremely thorough. At one stage I was anaemic and this followed an internal bleed, the examinations in my case came up with diagnosis of a section of the lower bowel was paralysed and everything else, from gullet down was inflamed, this was all deemed to be drug related. I now cannot take any form of anti-inflammatory not even ibuprofen.
So, try not to be too terrified! It may be something else!!
Best wishes for the tests, let us know how you get on.
Hugs, Kath
Thanks Kath .... Must admit all weekend I must have read hundreds of colon cancer sites and everyone mentions IDA as a red flag for one of the main symptons .... And made myself sick with worry .. I will let you know how it goes ... X
Doctor told me not to read anything on line about anything we think we might have. There is a huge percent you don't and then it could be something else. All we do is get ourselves worrying about things and then make ourselves sick from worrying. Don't worry hun until the doctor does more test and then you will get through it all.
I agree with Kath - anaemia is common with autoimmune diseases and if you have no bleeding or other symptoms then hopefully it is just your GP being very cautious. Good luck. Twitchy
Thanks twitch .... X
Stop reading! What a good GP you have, I'm iron deficient and have been given iron tablets. Not that I'm worried, although maybe I should be because I do have other symptoms. Nope, I'm not going to let my imagination run away with me, it could be caused by a million and one things. Try not to worry, good luck.
I am often iron deficient, it's the lupus and is very common. I have iron transfusions every other year, and it's fine. How low is your ferritin, mine was 3 ?
Not sure .... Maybe7 rings a bell ? X
A similar situation happened to me last year Jane, so please don't panic & think the worst. As others have said your doctors are being thorough & ruling out the risk of internal bleeding which can be caused by some of our meds.
In my case my anaemia was caused by the lupus itself, & things came back to normal quite quickly once the lupus was treated.
If you are still worried give your rheumy advice line a ring & get some reassurance directly from your health time.
Very best wishes. X
I have been anaemic on a few occasions as well due to auto immune illness. I too went for an endoscopy and colonoscopy. Your GP is obviously on the ball, much better to have these tests done than assume you aren't losing blood via your GI tract. I found the drinks that you have to take to clear out your system prior to the tests worse than the scopes themselves! I would recommend that you ask for sedation, I can't remember anything that happened, thankfully. It just means that you will need someone to drive you home afterwards.
Good luck.
Thanks for that advice Keyes .....
I had the same thing. Found nothing do the test the worst part was the meds to make you go drink gingerale with the suff so you can get down
