Colloidal silica

A big thank you to all, especially those who have discussed Quinoric and colloidal silica before. I have had a lot of auto-immune symptoms (Check my activity profile if interested) and these have resolved for now through a mostly paleo diet.

The one remaining problem I have is bipolar disorder. For this I take a very small amount of Olanzapine. I am usually supplied with a generic version but about 12 months ago was given a brand, which completely upset my mental and physical health, even though I only took it on one occasion. I made a note of the brand and my pharmacist tries to get me either of 2 suitable generics.

Last week I tried a new generic. Same result- woke up in the night, feeling horrendous. The next day I had back-ache for the first time in 12 months and painful ankles (a new one for me). I looked at my patient leaflets at the fillers and decided the main suspect was colloidal silica. I got no results from searching my first port of call -gluten free guerrillas- but when I looked on here I found confirmation.

If you brush your teeth without ill effects then "colloidal silica" can be ruled out as a cause as it's an ingredient in toothpaste ... link.springer.com/article/1...

I don't usually swallow my toothpaste.

Here is an article from the Lancet indicating that colloidal silica when ingested is implicated in causing an immune mediated response, in this case sarcoidosis. I extracted some comments below but the article can be read here.

“This case suggests that the drug vehicle—anhydrous colloidal silica—in the tablet formulations was the cause of the clinical picture, since this component was present in all tablets consumed. The symptoms did not appear when valsartan in capsule form was prescribed. We identified losartan as a tablet not containing anhydrous colloidal silica, and its administration at 50 mg twice per day since 2004 resolved the sarcoidosis while controlling the hypertension. This continues to be the only treatment prescribed and consumed and the patient remains symptom-free 5 years later.

The patient's clinical features of sarcoidosis appeared on three occasions of exposure to the anhydrous colloidal silica content of the drug formulations. The clinical picture was established within 3—4 weeks, and disappeared within 1—4 weeks after withdrawal of the tablets, but with a return of the hypertension within 3 weeks. This temporal sequence strongly implicates anhydrous colloidal silica as the cause of the patient's sarcoidosis since the symptoms were induced by tablets containing the anhydrous colloidal silica, and disappeared when silica was not a component of the formulation.

In our case, the suggestion is that the response to the anhydrous colloidal silica component of the medication (with a particle size range of 1—5 nm) is probably the end result of an immune and inflammatory response originating in the intestine in a genetically susceptible host.”
