I’ve been on plaquenil for 12 years . Plaquenil has been very good to me thank goodness . When I first started taking it I was put on the brand . Then I was switched to a generic . There was one generic that made me feel itchy all over so fortunately when I tried a different generic which was from Prasco labs it worked , no problems . For the past 5 years I always requested the generic from Prasco Labs . Recently Prasco Labs stopped making the generic hydroxychloroquine . I was heart broken . I spoke to a representative for Prasco and they suggested another generic or the brand . The brand is $600 a month with insurance so I opted out to try another generic . So I tried the generic from Dr. Reddy and again I experienced the itching again . So I spoke to my dr and I was able to get a few of the brand to try and the same thing happened itchy all over no rash . So I figured if I am allergic to hydroxychloroquine then the generic from Prasco lab will do the same . I still had a few of the generic prasco labs left I took one and I was fine . I am very frustrated now because how can this be happening after taking hydroxychloroquine for so many years . Has anybody had a problem with the different generics and found one that works ? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated . Sorry this is so long . Thank you .

Jances13, I was initially taking Plaquenil (not generic) and then generic. It took a long time, but realized the generic was adding to my stomach issues. I am taking regular Plaquenil and the stomach issues are much better. So, yes, I think there is a difference and for some of us, side affects occur from the generics.
Thank you Pumpkin , can you tell me what is the name of the manufacturer of the brand . The one that they gave me was from Concordia and that is also causing itching . Since the brand is so expensive have you found a reasonable place to get it from . I appreciate all your help 😀
Here in the UK it’s possible to have a drug manufactured specifically to a formula that suits you. They are referred to as ‘Specials’ and different manufacturers supply different types ie: capsule, IV, suspension. The process of prescription is no doubt very complicated but if you have an allergy or intolerance to one sort but need to take the medication it’s worth exploring the USA equivalent. I only know this I used to work for the royal pharmaceutical society of GB years ago but not in any scientific capacity I’m afraid.Good luck.
I was started on Quinoric and it made me feel really ill. I switched to Zentiva and my GP had this written up on my prescription so that I only get this brand from my pharmacy. Now and again the pharmacy slips up and gives me Quinoric but I refuse this and ask for Zeniva which I get even if it means waiting an extra day or two.
I had a bad reaction to quinoric and had a bit of a battle to get Zentiva but got it in the end , it is the same as Plaquenil. I really hope you can get it sorted. Big hugs xx
