My Hematologist suggested I not take the flu or covid vaccine. She is concerned it will trigger another episode of low platelets. I had been in remission for 15 months last year and I thought I had beaten ITP. I got the vaccines last year then about 2 months later my platelets were back down to 1. It took about 3 weeds of promacta and on IVig treatment to get them back to normal where I have remained for the last 10 months. So I do not want to mess that up by taking the vaccines again even though my hematologist is not sure that is what trigger a reccurence. She felt it was not worth the risk. She had another patient who she said got the covid vaccine and developed a blood disorder where her body attacked the red blood cells vs the platelets like ITP. The outcome for this patient was not favorable.

covid vaccine
Personal choice but I wouldn’t if you’re otherwise healthy. The links with the Covid vaccine and ITP onset are too strong in my opinion and Covid is largely not as bad as it was in the early days.
I recently transferred consultant due to a move and the moment I said the date I was diagnosed (it wasn’t my trigger) they asked was it after the Covid vaccine. They have had a sizeable influx of new patients since its introduction. But as I said it’s a personal choice not a public duty at this stage.
It is personal choice. My ITP is almost certainly secondary to the second dose of Pfeizer vaccine. But I have had boosters with platelet monitoring weekly. After flu vaccine they drop and return to normal (three weeks) after Covid booster (so far only Pfeizer) they drop and then rebound to higher then. Run at about 90. Must admit if I dropped to 1 I would not have vaccines. That said Covid is likely to have a worse affect than the vaccine.
With your situation, I would probably avoid vaccines as well. For what it is worth, here is my experience. Covid vaccines knocked my numbers down a bit, but they came back each time. I had a flu vaccine last fall, then numbers dropped and kept dropping from 70s down to 27 in January. I am on now on Doptelet and my numbers are near normal. I had Covid last summer and my count only dropped a little. I plan to get the flu vaccine and hope Doptelet prevents a recurrence of last year’s roller coaster.
most definitely wouldn’t touch the vax. So many adverse effects not limited to low platelets!
My platelets drop a lot after pfeizer vaccines last yer. I will wear mask in the winter at public place to prevent it.
I think this is very good advice. I would forego any and all since vaccines create an immune response and ITP is autoimmune.
I have had 4 doses of covid vaccination over past few years each time my platelets have gone down but then risen again after a few weeks but obviously it's personal choice to have the vaccine
