I don't know if it will come up but I'm dreading having to deal with it. It was suggested as my husbands lungs heal opting for a tracheotomy instead of a vent tube. I'm against it the family are for it. I don't want any excess procedures and I've witnessed the risk of a Trache tube. Don't know what to do

Trache no Trache
From what I can remember my wife telling me (as I was in an induced coma at the time) doctors prefer to do a tracheotomy as soon as possible due to the higher risk of infection with a vent tube, I had a vent tube for 19days because I was to critical to have a trache until then, I then had the trache for a further 62days with no problems other than being unable to speak which was frustrating trying to mouth words to people that can't lip read, so I had to rely on pen and paper which was very difficult due to so much muscle wastage and very exhausting.
I hope that may help if it come to making the decision.

Hi. I had a trache for about a month whilst in a coma, it worked well and the scar is tiny. It doesn't hurt but it is frustrating as you can't talk and hands don't work properly with the muscle wastage. Hugs
I had a trache for about 4 weeks. Yes it was frustrating not being able to speak, as others here have said, you have to 'improvise' and it can be exhausting. Also, having my lungs frequently suctioned through the trache was unpleasant, but not painful.
But I had no side or after effects from the trache, and the wound healed very quickly.
My partner has just been took out of induced comer after 26 days he had a ventilator and got infection after infection . a tracky is less of a risk of infection and i would of welcomed my partner to have tracky fitted if it did come to that but by the grace of god he is making progress xx
