Tracheostomy

Dr's have fitted a tracheostomy & àŕè slowly ɓŕìngìn̈g her out of the ìn̈duced coma

hi there. My dad has been sedated for over a week and whenever they take him off the ventilator he breathes a lot faster. They are now giving him a tracheotomy. I just wanted to know people’s experiences on how long they had them in for and if they were removed before leaving hospital etc. Background

I came out of icu 5 years ago after having respiratory failure pneumonia and being on ECMO and tracheostomy for 28 days, intubated 6 weeks. 5 years on, I still feel weak and tire really quickly. I have less concentration than I used to have too.

I was wondering if a tracheostomy might offer him more comfort compared to the intubation, for the time he has left. I don't even know if he wants that or how to even explain it to him and ask for his consent. We hadn't discussed this before as we didn't know it would come to this.

After a lot of talking with the doctors, and my mom being able to be out of sedation she chose the tracheostomy herself. And instead of immediately shipping her to an LTACH, the plan now is to wean her off of the ventilator.

After 4 days she was taken off sedation and a tracheostomy was placed. Her vitals are stable. It is now day 7 and she’s still not responding to commands. She opens her eyes when family talks to her but goes back to sleep.

It took ages to wean him off the ventilator, then he had the tracheostomy. My dad had a lot of liquid around his lungs that didn’t help him breathe properly, eventually after constantly arguing demanding further treatment, they decided to preform another operation to remove excessive liquid.

There is talk of him coming home when he has an uncuffed tracheostomy and still feeding through his RIG. My question is has anyone experience of coming home with a CUFFED tracheostomy as if he can't tolerate cuff down after 8-10 weeks, he'll have this for a very long time.

In my opinion that obviously because he has a tracheostomy which makes it harder to breathe especially if it's hot weather. He never ceases to amaze me, my superhero 💖

Then told us tracheostomy or to just switch to making her comfortable. They started really being negative about the trach saying she will be dependent on it for life, and no facility will take her because she's on continuous dialysis.

They were saying he'd have to go to a nursing home in Leeds to live, for tracheostomy care. We said ABSOLUTELY NOT, he's coming home, and we'll sign any paperwork to take responsibility for that. Still working on getting the cuff down so he can have different trachy.

I ended up waking up with a tracheostomy, (I could not talk) lost all of my functions & muscle mass. Being in ITU and no motor functions was so hard. I was having food via a tube,my mouth was dry,having no sense of day/night. I could not have any visitors because of covid restrictions.

my husband was diagnosed with MSA in September 2024 but had symptoms for about 4year but was undiagnosed. He’s got stridor quit bad and the consultant is thinking of giving him a tracheotomy, but we are not sure. Is there anybody else in the same position

Are there any members of this group who are aware of anyone being placed into an induced coma with pneumonia and whilst in the coma suffered kidney issues and were placed on dialysis and then came off it. Has anyone knowledge of anyone coming out of an induced coma and being unable to speak or move

He's had a surgical tracheostomy now and off sedation but has such muscle wastage around his body, he can't move his arms/legs etc and has subluxation of the shoulders, which isn't helping. I just thought I'd give you an update.

Is it just me or does anyone else regularly get food and drink into your windpipe. Its not a full blown choking episode but very close, and requires a slow big deep breath and strong cough to shift it. I know when I have managed to shift it because it normally comes flying out.
