Stopping blood thinner for surgery

Hi All, In late July I had either a TIA or a migraine, the doctors are divided on what it was. In the course of the scans and tests, they found an aneurysm plus an "area of concern" in my brain. I'm scheduled for surgery on Oct. 25. I'm supposed to add another antiplatelet (in addition to the aspirin), and stop the blood thinner two full days before. Of course I'm a little concerned about stopping apixiban for 2 days before. On the day of surgery they'll use heparin, but I don't remember the details about that.

Have you stopped your blood thinner for surgery? How did that go?

I am triple positive, LA, hashimoto's, sjogren's etc.

Thanks so much! Anita in CO

Had surgery on a skin lesion last week in Dublin. Stopped warfarin 4 days before the op. Started Clexane 2 days before. Restarted warfarin 12 hours afterwards. Will continue Clexane until INR is >1.8. My range is 2-3.5.

I’m on heparin. I had spinal surgery. I stopped the heparin the night before surgery and started again the morning after.

What you are suggesting sounds normal. Was it agreed with your haematologist? Good Luck I hope all goes well.

I have had a hip replacement and a knee replacement. In both I stopped warfarin a dew days before and gave myself clexane shots. No problem. And, as I am one of the few people who actually LOVES the taste of liver and knowing that the Vitamin K in liver has no effect on clexane's efficacy, I splurged and enjoyed old fashioned liver and onions dinners.

And self injection is easy. Clean the skin around the belly button with HO or alcohol, then insert the needle about 1inch from belly button. Slowly push the needle plunger down. After you push the plunger down, pause and then slowly remove the needle. Seek to use different injection sites around the belly button each time.

And eat all the liver you want!

I have had many surgeries/procedures where I bridged with heparin. I too had an aneurysm but it was in a vein by my left kidney. It was the size of a softball. They did a coil procedure through my neck. The scary thing was I wasn’t bridged. I had taken warfarin, aspirin and fish oil that morning. I had very brave, skilled Drs It was scary, and would not recommend. But I survived and left the hospital 2 hours later.

Are they doing a coil procedure? Or removal?

You will be fine. Trust:).

Pooky7, he said he will probably use coils, but until he can see it better with the angiogram, it’s open to change. Also, he has to see what the other unknown spot is. Glad you are okay, what a scary experience. Thank you for your post.

4 of my cousins had complicated coils. All doing well 😊. In the brain. Mine was by my kidney The Drs know what they are doing. Trust

Poorly 7, that is encouraging to hear. I’m really very (very!) afraid of this. Thanks for your positive words!

It sounds like they are sorting out your bridging plan with this? I hope your procedure goes well for you. MaryF

just seeing this Anita.

Am in an infusion lab at this very moment- so will get with you very soon.

Can you make sure you are genetically tested through a company called Invitae for Loeys Dietz syndrome? )Or even VEDS which I do not think you have… you would know by now…. )

It’s the genetic connective tissues disease panel and it tests for 93 diseases.

I tested for Loeys - Dietz syndrome type 5 ( TFGB3-5)

It disregulated the immune system, ( tendency to cause autoimmune disease - lupus/ and very fragile veins, and aneurysms. Type 5 is a later adult onset. ) Jill Schofield ordered in my test.

KellyInTexas, thank you, I will check on this, I’m traveling and will be home Saturday. Not much internet access where we are. Nice connection at the moment. I’ll read up on the Loeys-Dietz. Thanks again.
