Mirena Coil.......

Hi I really wanted and advice or suggestions as am very fed up now.

I finally had my mirena coil fitted at the end of October for heavy bleeding (caused by the warfarin) which not only restricted what I did was also causing me to be iron deficient (two iron transfusions this year) .

Initially seemed fine for 5 days minimal pain and bleeding, then got my period (about 5 days early) was heavy as usual but not quite as bad. When after a week this should have been tailoring off i kept on bleeding at a moderate level, at the end of the second week I got pain and much heavier bleeding, saw GP, said she could see it but unsure in right place and to get a scan. On the Sunday was in excruciating pain and ended up in a&e, saw gynaecology team who said ?infection and same may not be in right place so get a more urgent scan. Since then the third week bled much more, had scan on Friday, coil not in right place at all so had to be removed, (was so disappointed after the time to get it in the first place), but also showed a pocket off blood too. Asked about when bleeding might calm down, stop, no answer given.

Since Friday pain gone away but still getting lots of bleeding, I'm aware I'm on warfarin and will bleed more but this is ridiculous, it's like a three week bad period.

Seeing GP tomorrow as I feel rubbish and fed up and it's restricting what I can do.

Anyone else had coil problems? Or bled heavily? Wanted some reassurance really as feel I'm going to end up anaemic and iron deficient again if I don't stop bleeding soon 😔

Ahhh Cheryl you know how disappointed I am for you as we’ve been in the exact same position with anaemia and bleeding issues.

Have you thought about an endometrial ablation? Is that a possibility for you? Ask your gp for another urgent referral to gynae if you have no follow up appointment so they can go through your options with you.

Good luck and let me know how you get on x

Hello chelbe29

I have no coil experiences but just wanted to say you have my sympathies, I have been battling heavy periods for the past 12 months which cause me to be anaemic too. It’s no fun feeling you can’t leave the house due to severe blood loss. I hope the GP is supportive to you tomorrow. Sending you a hug xx

Thank you, how do you cope with your heavy periods and iron/anaemia issues?

I have been on iron supplements from the GP for the last six months, at first test is was level 4, three months later my iron level was 28. Every time I bleed I worry about how much iron I’m losing along with the blood! The blood loss is so heavy that the most absorbant sanitary towel won’t last an hour and I can’t wear tampons due to the prolapse. The only way I cope at the moment is by buying the Tena lady incontinence pants to absorb the heavy blood loss as they will give me a couple of hours protection. It’s pretty miserable to be honest only wearing dark clothes in case of leaks and worrying about if it’s safe to sit down on someone’s chair for fear of leaving a mark. I have been referred to a gynaecologist who has offered me an ablation but I’m apprehensive to commit after reading some horror stories although I appreciate there is a risk to all procedures.

Let me know how you get on tomorrow at the GP, best wishes x

HI, this sounds very rough, sorry. The main thing is that you are monitored, to make sure the bleeding stops, and the infection is sorted. Maybe you will need more iron, certainly your infection will clear up quicker if your iron levels are ok. Some ladies end up having an womb ablation if things are not working out for them coil wise. It is really important that you get some help to try and get this phase under control. Do let us know how it goes. MaryF

I had the same coil fitted and it turned out that I had massive fibroids, bleeding continuously for a year before I had a hysterectomy, everyone kept blaming the warfarin, if they had examined me properly this would have been picked up much sooner saving me the pain, restricted life and ..... expense. Hope you get help soon.

So I went to the GP, she was unsure why still bleeding heavily after it was removed. ? Body adjusting, ?early period, ?this pocket of blood ?somerhing causing the bleeding. She has requested another ultrasound. Not sure if this is enough, but I'll have to wait and see.
