Loss of taste & smell for almost 5 months

I lost my sense of taste and smell back in January and it still hasn’t come back. All I can taste are certain salts. I don’t know how to explain it, but I do have that sensation of certain foods. If it’s sour or bitter I know or if it’s really sweet I know. I just can’t TASTE it. I’m getting really peeved and just need some advice., because this has gone on for too long now. Can anyone suggest something?

(It’s really bugging NOW because now that I have braces, food is no longer enjoyable to eat and I don’t really want to eat)

Hi TacoCat25 ,

Did you ask/talk to your doctor about the issue? Do they want you to come in for an appointment?

I have, yes. They said no one really knows about it and that people usually get it back after four months.

Hi, there. Welcome to COVID. I caught the virus about a year ago and still struggling with what you are going through. My taste and smell is finally coming back, slowly but surely. If it is COVID for you, hang in there, it should get better. Like you, I could taste sweet or sour but that’s all. If I put peanut butter in my mouth, the only way I could tell it was peanut butter cause it stuck to the roof of my mouth. 🥴 oh, and salt, yeah.

I’m glad your getting your senses back. That must feel great. How many months did yours take?

My daughter -in law had same loss of taste and smell after Covid. It did take a few months to come back, but getting better now. Don't lose hope!

Hi TacoCat25,How do you feel about your braces now? What have you been able to make for your meals? Are you able to taste/smell any?

They aren’t as noticeable, but eating normally is still a bit hard. I’ve started eating regular food. Can’t taste or smell a thing (except salt)

in reply to TacoCat25

I’m glad you can eat reg food now and braces is not so noticeable anymore. Hmm you can taste the salt. What about when stuff is citrusy like lemon juice, can you tell?

Not really, it’s mostly sweet, sour, and bitter. Not the actual taste of foods, just the way they feel on your taste buds

Your smell and taste neurons turn over really quickly. The ones you have now have have never smelt or tasted. You have to retrain them.

Good afternoon, My sense of taste and smell varies and I have completely lost both before now - I have found taking the supplement Zinc with copper really helps improve my taste and smell.

Best wishes

Loss of taste and smell are symptoms of Covid. Please see your doctor about this.

I know, I had covid months ago, but my loss senses are still lingering. My doctor said there’s nothing much to do except take allergy medicine

Just FYI, I had covid in January also... and my hair turned gray. I mean, I have a line of salt-and-pepper-gray hair growing out so that it looks like I suddenly stopped dying it...but I never DID dye it, so there was nothing to stop. It's about 4-5 inches now. I figure that works out to about five months ago. Isn't that weird?

My daughter--who gave her covid to me thank you very much--lost her taste and smell and it only came back last month, so hang in there.

I suspect my salt-and-pepper-gray hair is permanent :o(

Covid and then my reactions to the vaccines has turned me, a middle aged woman with underlying health conditions, into an old woman. I completely lost my taste and smell with covid in January and it has come back somewhat but like the op I am best sensing with salty, etc. I know because I'm eating a lot of plain, nonfat Greek yoghurt and I could never really tolerate plain yoghurt well before covid. I make a salad and mostly can't taste it.
