Hello Hans1 welcome to the forum and thank you for introducing yourself, I'm glad that hibiscus tea lowers your blood pressure, I was not aware of this book and here's a review which claims that they cherry pick facts to suit them, so here's a link to a review on HealthLine, please see:

Yea thanks, that is interesting and gives the background to the book. Personally, I have always been sceptical of this type of book but my friends suggest I read it. I won't now. I will say that my blood pressure is mainly controlled using Amodipine 10mg per day. The hibiscus seems to keep it steadier. But as you say its a bit "chicken and egg"

Hi Hans1

I think there's a copy of this book in my local library. I might have a look at it next time I'm there - I've heard people mention Dr Greger's name from time to time, and I know he's an advocate of plant-based eating and health issues. But I've not read his book, so I can't really comment more than that. Infact, that's probably not a helpful reply, but I wanted to welcome you to the Healthy eating forum, and I hope you're enjoying the weekend.

I don't think I've tried Hibiscus tea - does it have a strong flavour? Is it pleasant?

Zest :-)

Don’t have Dr. Michael Greger book "How Not To Die", Hans1, but am (modestly) familiar with Dr. Greger’s work ( healthunlocked.com/cure-art... ).

Have appreciated 🙏 😌 & benefited from his free 🆓 work at NutritionFacts.org website: nutritionfacts.org/ *

If you’re not interested in purchasing books 📚 (or it’s simply out of budget 💸 ), Dr. Greger’s NutritionFacts.org website is full of substantive, reputable nutrition information for all of us to explore (to help educate ourselves) through:

. . . Videos 📹 ( nutritionfacts.org/videos/ ) with transcripts 📄 & sources cited

. . . Audio Podcasts 🎙 ( nutritionfacts.org/audio/ ), etc.

. . . Search 🔎 function at top of pages

.

[*NutritionFacts.org is Dr. Greger’s well-respected 🆓 nutrition/ food information website ( nutritionfacts.org/about/ ). It’s all there for our perusal IF ever — whenever — we’re interested & ready to explore 🕵️ 🔎 . . . . 👍👍 ]

Merely an ‘aside’, Hans1:

Have been living a Whole Foods Plant Based (WFPB)* ‘life’ [ala Michael Greger, T. Colin Campbell, Dean Ornish, Neal Barnard, Caldwell Esselstyn, John McDougall, Michael Klaper, et. al. ( healthunlocked.com/nras/pos... )] for quite some time.

Highly recommend it ( healthunlocked.com/healthye... ). 😊👍👍

If you’re looking for layman’s opinions, about Dr. Michael Greger’s book "How Not To Die", Hans1, consider book review ‘opinions’ at: amazon.co.uk/How-Not-Die-Di...

If you’re seeking professional perspectives (’educated opinions’) 🧑‍🎓 from those trained in the field 🧑‍⚕️ 🩺 🧑‍🔬 🧬 , you might find ‘google scholar’ ( scholar.google.com/ ) searches useful: scholar.google.com/scholar?...

.

Aside:

In relation to Jerry’s reference above ( healthunlocked.com/healthye... ) to HealthLine’s Denise Minger’s article, "’How Not to Die’ by Dr. Michael Greger: A Critical Review"( healthline.com/nutrition/ho... ), kindly be aware:

. . • Fortunately (or unfortunately), Denise Minger’s layman’s ‘opinions’ have been questioned, dismissed, disregarded by reputable authorities including T. Colin Campbell*.

[*T. Colin Campbell politely addressed her "A Response to Denise Minger’s Critique of The China Study" ( nutritionstudies.org/minger... ) when she attempted to debunk his legitimate, authoritative, well-respected work "The China Study" ( google.com/search?as_q=T.+C... ). She’s apparently attempted to do likewise with Dr. Greger’s book "How Not To Die". Others haven’t been as polite/ respectful toward Denise Minger (or her views) ( scribd.com/doc/76821348/It-... , en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%... ) as T. C. Campbell in placing her laymen’s opinions ’in context’.]

We’re each free to use our own minds 🧠 to think 🤔 💭 through what makes sense ⚖️ .

Context, legitimate ‘expertise‘/ sources, etc. also factor into the validity of ‘opinions’ expressed informally (& formally) on forums, in articles/blogs, videos, & even from our friends …

. . . "Consider the source" ( english.stackexchange.com/q... ).

. . . . . . "Consider the source.” 🤔 💭 💭

.

Douglas Adams ( bbc.co.uk/programmes/articl... ) thought may be apropos:

. . . 🗣 “All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated and well supported in logic and argument than others.” ( philosophybitmaps.tumblr.co... )

.

If you are noticing benefit from drinking Hibiscus Tea 🌺 🍵 , Hans1, ("I am using the Hibiscus tea to control blood pressure and it works") in reducing 📉 blood pressure, you may be interested in looking at additional blood-pressure-lowering ideas: nutritionfacts.org/?s=blood... , nutritionstudies.org/?s=blo... 😊

Explore for yourself & kindly continue consulting with (working hand in hand 🤝 with) your physicians 👩‍⚕️ 🧑‍⚕️ 👨‍⚕️ .

And, please keep asking about (& learning from) different perspectives — laymen & professionals.

Kindly consider weighing each viewpoint in balance ⚖️ & decide for yourself — via research 🕵️ 🔎 , study 🧑‍🏫 🧑‍💻 , experiential learning 🥴💥🔨 , & contemplation 🤔 💭💭 — what makes sense for you as well as what proves to work for you. 👍👍

Wishing you well, Hans1. 😌 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞

I respect Dr Greger more than most of the so-called health gurus out there. His book is excellent. It's 600 pages, but half of that is references. He doesn't just talk about what he thinks people should do (like some of them), but everything he writes is based on hard science facts. His information is so excellent because he does SO much research. He recorded a special for the US PBS stations called How Not To Die, and parts of it are available on YouTube. He sends out a 3-5 minute video everyday where he discusses various topics -- get on his mailing list at NutritionFacts.org .

Thank you kindly, goldey, for "How Not To Die" US PBS YouTube reference. Much appreciated. 🙏 😌

Poked around & found it at: pbs.org/video/how-not-to-di... [So far, this PBS video isn’t working. (Error message reads: "We are experiencing technical difficulties that are preventing us from playing the video at this time. Please check back again soon.”)]

In meantime, found this Dr. Michael Greger video "HOW NOT TO DIE: The Role of Diet in Preventing, Arresting, & Reversing Our Top 15 Killers" [1+ hour] from Dr. Greger’s NutritionFacts.org website: nutritionfacts.org/video/ho... ]

😌 🙏 🍀 🌺 🌞
