This has been on the news today and it is very interesting how much plastic is used in packaging food, in 2017 Tesco's used 252,500 tonnes of plastic packaging in 2017 and Sainsbury's 120,000 tonnes.
I am pleased to see that they are making facilities for shoppers who want to bring their own reusable eco bags so the TidyClub is getting its wish.
One area that uses a lot of plastic is ready prepared salads fruit and snacks and take away drinks like iced coffee's as they were on Watchdog on tv last night where not all the coffee shop chains have any facility to recycle the plastic cups...6.4 million iced coffees were sold in the UK in one week in the heat wave.
So once we start to look into this, plastic waste has to be tackled and if consumers avoided buying anything in plastic just for a day that would make an impact...we should make an effort to make the point we do not want this plastic waste
Thanks for this information, it's interesting and good to hear that the supermarkets are doing something to tackle the issue of plastic waste.

Hi Hidden
Very interesting articles, I do wonder though why it's going to take around 5 years before plastic use is eliminated.
The one thing I can never understand is why on earth they shrinkwrap swedes/broccoli/cucumbers etc. I worked in a fruit and vegetable shop when I was a teenager (they are practically non existent now) and the only thing wrapped in plastic were 5lb bags of potatoes, if only we had known then what an impact plastic would have some 40+ years later!
I'm not impressed with my Council as they do not recycle most plastics, they only recycle plastic bottles and nothing else which is plastic.
I'd been watching a programme on TV about waste and one company only have 5% of their waste that goes to landfill. They sort through their waste and remove recyclables.
Let's hope this is sorted sooner rather than later!
According to the BBC, Greenpeace has ranked Sainsburys as 10th compared to other uk supermarkets, for its recyling policies. Morrisons and Waitrose are leading the way. There's a whole article about what the different supermarkets are planning under the title,
Plastic packaging: how are the supermarkets doing?
(Sorry can't get the link)
Where I live, we have a lot of Booths stores and they seem to be getting the message too. One of the stores has recently installed electric charge points for cars, fill up points for washing up liquid and coffee cup recycling.
I used to spend 3 days a week IN the north sea, On my Windy board, Jet -ski or Catamaran. All types of weather & not freighted of getting wet. Young & daft ?
