I am 78yrs of age and have been treated for metastic prostrate cancer with spread to bones and lung. Chemotherapy reducing psa from 450 to 0.14 and testosterone to 4mo/l. Going forward with hormone treatment has uncertainties for me. Am basically on a Keto diet and trying to keep fit.

What advice have you been given by your doctors?

Hello shoeym, welcome to HE and I’m so sorry that you have cancer which has spread.

Cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and carrots whole grains and legumes are supposed to help and foods to avoid are red meats processed foods and fatty foods.

Here’s a link with dietary advice for prostate cancer:

healthline.com/health/prost...

You will get a standard redirection notice but that’s only because it’s not an HU domain.

I wish you well 🙏 and if you any recipes advice then you just ask. 😊

Hi shoeym, I'm really sorry to hear about your diagnosis.

I thought this show was quite a useful guide for dieting for cancer, and has a qualified oncologists take on the subject: thedoctorskitchen.com/podca...

The top takeaways are that you need to reduce inflammation (personally I like the autoimmune protocol for this), and they also said that yoga is a really useful tool, and improved patient outcomes.

Good luck with your changes :)

My late father (same diagnosis) participated in a study on the impact of protein supplements and exercise. I don't think the study has been published yet, but I can tell you it had no positive impact on him (other than the satisfaction of contribution to knowledge) He was however a fit man already and would not even have been eligible for the study at his pre-treatment levels of activity.

My own view, informed by

1) my professional background (HV, district nurse, additional degree in medical decision making and research)

2) the experience of caring for him (and discussions with his professional carers and all the materials available from mainstream cancer care and research organisations),

3) previously another relative with the same diagnosis denying himself a particular sort of food he especially enjoyed due to health fears

4) having a close friend who lives with the disabling after effects of another cancer and who is on a 'keto' diet for weight loss

is that in these situations **eating what you genuinely enjoy is the most important thing**. That does not mean that a *conventionally* healthy diet is of no value and that diet has no value in prevention and management of symptoms. If you feel better in the here and now eating the way you do (as distinct from feeling you should) that's great.

I have seen benefits from the exclusion 'keto' involves when a person is in a habit (for whatever reason) of genuinely overeating (rather than simply enjoying) cake and similar (ie at least daily and sometimes a whole packet of biscuits etc) and becoming miserable and uncomfortable about weight gain. Otherwise I have serious concerns where someone has a potentially life limiting and fatiguing condition/treatment - especially if your version of keto is one of those which excludes a number of common fruit and veg items.

Long may your PSA stay low and your mets stay still and small, and enjoy your life.
