Hi and welcome to the group.

I eat a low carb high protein and gluten free diet because I have both Type 1 Diabetes and also a wheat/gluten intolerance. The low carb high protein diet helps me keep my blood sugars even during the day and evening hours. The gluten free diet is because of having massive cramps anytime I would eat anything that was cooked out of wheat flour. I feel a lot better now being off gluten for 4 years.

Yes... and no....

For a few years in the 80s I went gluten free following an evidence based exclusion diet trial (initially a few other things were identified as well but you go back and re-test and those were just coincidence). It improved my health enough for me to complete my degree and post graduate course and get into work.

Sadly it wasn't effective longer term (but returning to eating gluten didn't make things any worse than they already were).

Hi I'm a coeliac so need a gluten free diet and it works for me but thats because I'm intolerant to gluten.

Hi Rkrell1021

I don't have any food intolerances that I'm aware of, so I tend to just eat most things - including foods including gluten - so I haven't got any experience of being 'gluten-free' - however I would like to wish you well and Welcome you to the Healthy Eating forum - and hope you'll enjoy participating here.

I have tried both dairy and gluten free it helped for a bit with my IBS but went back to normal eating and now several years down the line I find myself having to use some gluten free products for example bread and biscuits as my body won’t except anything else Gail

Yes, gluten free did wonders for arthritis in my fingers. If I hadn't read about others who had success with this, I'd have never tried it, but I got desperate over a year ago with burning even in my toe joints. I've been gluten free ever since. Between that and a product called Penetrex I get at amazon, my joints are much, much better. (I'm 65.) Dr. Wm Davis (Wheat Belly and Undoctored) claims that gluten intolerance is much more widespread than you'd think, since people react differently. I later went low carb anyway, after watching my mother deteriorate with Alzheimer's.

Going gluten free, isn't an option for some people. Are you trying to decide whether to follow a gluten free diet even though you are not intolerant to gluten?

I went gluten free because I found, following an exclusion diet, that gluten made me feel very ill and I couldn't return to eating it. However, five years down the track, I've found that not only do I now feel the best I've ever felt in my life, but my life long asthma has completely disappeared along with my chronic hay fever and an extreme allergy to cats. And whereas most of the people in my family of origin, have developed diabetes type two, and have numerous health complaints, I am fit and healthy and am not on any medications. I don't know if it's because I avoid gluten but I assume its a big factor.

I think that in my case, gluten was responsible for causing a lot of inflammation in my body and this affected me badly in lots of different ways quite apart from the digestive problems. I don't know if it would do the same to someone who is not intolerant of it.
