I'm 30-years-old and I'm very obese and depressed. I always think if I were skinny, I’d be happy. I've been stuck in my room for 2 weeks. What should I do?

Stop beating yourself up with regards to your weight is the first thing you should do . A healthy mind is the start to a healthy body . Have you thought of going to your GP to discuss how you feel ? X

I know this sounds trite, but you should lose weight; and yes, it probably will make you happy. I have no time for the idea that one should just "learn to love yourself as you are" when what you see in the mirror is not what you want to see. Obviously, being slim won't fix all that ails you, but it'll make an enormous difference to your well-being.

Can I suggest you join the LCHF forum? There's a lot of practical advice there. Even if you are seriously overweight, you can make a radical difference to your bodyweight simply by altering the things you eat. The fact that you're only 30 means that your body will recover pretty well from the damage that's been done. I wouldn't say the process is easy exactly, but it's not nearly as painful and complicated as some would have you believe.

Hello sarahshapiro1375_ I agree with the above, whilst losing weight can't magically make you happy and solve every problem it helps with some and if you feel physically better that puts you in a better place to tackle the rest. You might want to check out the weight loss forum too as there is an active group there where you can interact and get daily support. Good luck 😀

Hi Sarah and poor you, now there is only one person stopping you from going out and thats you so what you have to realise is that lots of us get self conscious have self doubts, I get very self conscious sometimes. So you are not alone in your feelings so well done for sharing them.

Obviously if you have clinical depression then you need to see a Dr.

I think that you want to tell yourself: 'I'm OK you're OK" and believe it and when you go out instead of wondering what others are thinking about you look at them compassionately and wonder what worries they have and this distraction from self thinking should help.

Here's a couple of links that may interest you,

The Weight loss forum where you will be amongst like minded people and Health Walk for those who like to get out and about for a walk please see:

And good luck and you can do it,

Jerry 🙂

It's not as simple as being skinny will make me happy, I'm afraid. Lots of people think that changes in body will change happiness levels and although initially it does it doesn't last long.

I'd say start with small day to day targets that you can achieve. Even if it's leave my room for 30 minutes and do a task, just build up from there.

Stay positive x

Hi Sarahshapiro1375,

I'm about the same age as you and I get it, I have been overweight and currently in the obese range BMI wise so that's why I joined, im on this forum and the weight loss one and people here are really nice and supportive. I think sometimes you have to start with small goals, sometimes I feel down about it and want to give up if I look too far ahead goal wise and feel its not worth it, but small goals can really help. I don't know what stage healthwise or weight wise you are so tailor it to the stage you are. It might be deciding to walk or bike everyday, just for a few minutes, whether it 5, 10, 15 or even 30 minutes. Getting some fresh air really can help too with how you feel and when you reach your health goal you feel good that your doing something and have achieved something. Also don't worry about being judged on here, everyone is in the same boat, they all want to get healthier and feel happier. I wasn't sure about posting my weight because I felt conscious about it but after reading a few posts and seeing how supportive people are I joined the weigh ins on the weight loss forum. everyone is at different stages but that's fine, its about making those changes and moving from a place you don't want to be anymore to somewhere you want to be. I hope this helps and welcome to the group.

I'm sorry to hear of your plight. Here is what I would do. Are you taking in enough caffeine? I find that Caffeine stimulates my metabolism and motivates me to do things I would not be able to make myself do without it, as well as making me feel happy. I use high caffeine coffee sticks from the health food shop when I don't feel like going out and it changes my mind for me. I would get a wide black long dress and put on some makeup to emphasise my good points, eyes or lips, fix my hair big and wide, makes the body look more in proportion, and get out there! Follow some hobby you are really interested in. The more you are out there the more you will lose weight by distracting yourself from thinking about food and by walking off calories. Yesterday I was out helping a friend who has just gone vegan, to find suitable food and places to eat. Going around the various shops and vegan cafes, my phone app tells me I walked, 9,514 steps, approx. 4 miles, and used up 238 calories! I didn't even notice because I was so interested in what I was doing! A phone app like that is a great motivator. Hope this helps.
