Hi guys - I joined the Walking for Health community a few weeks ago - I've neglected myself for a number of years now, but have decided that enough is enough (finally!). I'm now ready to take things a little bit further and so have joined your group too! (I tend to feel overwhelmed if I try too many new things at the same time.) My main problems, (apart from carrying too much weight!), are arthritis in the spine and type 2 diabetes. I KNOW these can be improved by diet and I hope being a member of the Healthy Eating community will give me the inspiration I need to eat better, instead of just having good intentions, lol!

Hi and welcome to the group.

Please check out the Diabetes Research and Wellness Foundation website for the free leaflets on Exercise and Diabetes and the Diet and Diabetes. Both can be downloaded, read and/or listened to anytime.

Hope this helps!

Thanks! It's been a while since I've visited the site - a few years actually - and a look with my new attitude will be really helpful!

You're welcome! Do you want to join both groups (DRWF/DI)? Both groups are on HU.

Thanks - I'll check them both out!

Hi Kay, I have had Psoriatic Arthritis for over 40 years, and 2 years ago that developed into both Osteo (both knees) and Rheumatoid which put me finally into a wheelchair. Faced with a horrible future I was fortunate to find a solution to my health problems and now have no medication and no symptoms of any of my arthritises by changing to a whole-food plant-based diet with no oils. You can watch a short video of my story youtube.com/watch?v=TxGWZ6h... if interested.

I also write a blog on the subject at foodandarthritis.blogspot.c...

Andy - what an absolute inspiration you are! Well done in overcoming the tragedy in your life and then finding the strength to sort out your health problems. Not many people would have been able to do that. I will visit your blog regularly. I, happily, don't like meat very much - but I LOVE the nightshades and often have stuffed aubergine for dinner! So, with immediate effect the nightshades are out of my diet. I will study your recommendations in depth. I am excited by your journey! Thank you for sharing.

Thanks Champak - I've had arthritis since I was in my late 30s, and that was not because of weight. However, it made me less mobile and over the last 30 years my weight has soared! I can and regularly do, control my diabetes with diet - but I also fall off the wagon regularly too! I can't cope with belonging to too many groups at one time - I get overwhelmed. That's why I thought combining healthy eating with the walking group made sense for me. Hopefully a sensible walking regime will help with my mobility problems, as well as help with the diabetes. As you rightly say, one must have patience...
