I just discovered this forum after surfing around Health Unlocked, I'm part of another forum in connection with my Traumatic Brain Injury. I was diagnosed with PTSD in 1999 and nothing further was done and I now realise that as further trauma has invaded my life in the intervening decades that my PTSD has only got worse.

I realised how significant my PTSD was after recently listening to the Bessel van der Kolk audiobook "The Body Keeps the Score". I had attended one of his workshops in 2017 along with attending a Gabor Mate workshop.

I'm also 8 years clean and sober today and when I saw the forum's first word in its title was HEAL, I though it's about time I began to move towards living in the solution as opposed to 36 years since my TBI of living in the problem.

I'm here to learn how to heal.

Hi Glenquoich,

Welcome to the forum.

Traumatic Brain Injury is definitely a huge subject and it often comes together with PTSD and they overlap in some ways.

There is a huge need for knowledge in this specific area. We have many members that have both but there wasn't many resources in my opinion.

I am very sorry that nothing further was done about your PTSD after initial diagnosis. I feel like back then there wasn't much in terms of understanding trauma and access to specific trauma therapies was very limited and only to military or first responders.

Bessel van der Kolk is one of the most respected and knowledgeable experts and I agree that his book is excellent and covering many different subjects/situations.

It is amazing that you were able to attend his workshop.

I was trying to get access to trauma support many years ago and it was extremely hard to find anyone.

Through this community I gained access to some resources and books and eventually found a private therapist that helped a lot. It makes such a difference to have knowledgeable specialist but there aren't enough of those out there.

Congratulations on being 8 years clean and sober! 🎉

That is amazing and such a huge accomplishment.

Wow, 36 years is such a long time but it is possible to heal at any time, even after many years, and I certainly feel you have already found a lot of healing from what you shared so this can bring hope that IT IS POSSIBLE TO HEAL even after years of living in trauma.

Thank you for being here...
