No wonder we think of mushrooms and toadstools as magic. They appear overnight and in such amazing colours, shapes and patterns. The red one with white spots is the Fly Agaric. It is where the iconic image of a fairytale toadstool in children's stories comes from. It has a further association with magic in that it is supposed to have been used by so called witches who took it to help them fly through the air on broomsticks. It has hallucinogenic properties when eaten and so made the taker feel as if they were flying.
However the name Fly Agaric does not have its origins here, it was used as a means to kill flies in cottage homes by being put in milk in a saucer which the flies were attracted to and then poisoned when they sipped the contents.
