Duodenitis . . ?

So, I have had my endoscope (most horrendous experience of my life!). I have been diagnosed with Duodenitis and am awaiting the biopsy results.

Anyone else got Duodenitis? I am struggling to find information regarding whether consistent with Coeliac.

Hi LilacPrincess, So sorry that you have had to go through this and at Christmas time as well.

This condition does happen in coeliac disease, the duodenum being the first part of the small intestine is often either inflamed or damaged by gluten in the diet. It is often treated in a similar way to a peptic ulcer to calm everything down. Best advice until you go back to the doctor is to have a very simple diet until the inflammation is under control. In some cases Helicobacter pylori is the cause - but your doctor will have tested for this and will give you anti-biotics if any bacteria have been found or are suspected.

There are a few queries on the US coeliac forums asking about duodenitis.

Here is a link that will explain a little more about it:

I hope that you soon feel much better! Best wishes, x

Thanks Lynxcat,

Could find info on Duodenitis and understand what is it. Was just curious to know if it is something that is common with CD . . not long to wait now for biopsy results so hopefully have some answers soon.

Back onto GF (and dairy free) diet now, hoping effects of the last 6 weeks of eating 'rubbish' wears off soon :o) xx

Hi LilacPrincess

There are accounts of people with coeliac disease also with duodenitis and this may be because gluten creates susceptibility to so many infections and different types of inflammation. I have come across the problem several times on various coeliac sites and sadly do not have the links to pass onto you but I have found some others and you may wish to look at these:

europepmc.org/articles/PMC5...

This one lists the Chronic non-specific duodenitis found in coeliacs:

Just hope that this helps you. Try not to worry, I'm sure that with plenty of rest, light food and some anti-biotics you will be on the mend very soon.

Take care, Lynne xx
