I have coeliac disease. The other day I talked to a doctor (over the phone, of course) to discuss results of my blood test. I then said that I would like to request a IgA anti-TTG test for my son (as you know, this is done through a blood test). I was told that now doctors can no longer request this test, only a “specialist” can. Is this correct? It seems absurd to me that you need to talk to “a specialist” to request a blood test. I have to try and talk to another doctor to double check, but haven’t had a chance to do so (considering how hard it is to talk to a doctor, especially if you work full time…)

requesting a IgA anti-TTG test in the UK
Hi angelias.
That doesn’t sound correct. As far as I can see the NHS NiCE guidelines have not changed. Try to get an appointment for your son. He should be tested under guidelines as you a first degree relative have coeliac disease. Regardless whether he is symptomatic. A primary care GP requests the ‘Coeliac Screen’ normally. It’s true the secondary care hospital dieticians and specialists also can request. So if you really cannot get anywhere with your GP try to get referral to a hospital dietitian for him, maybe?

Hi,
Apologies for the slow response.
It perhaps depends on the age of your son. Adult services are often more straightforward. However, all of your first-degree relatives have a right to get tested.
You might find the nice guidelines NG 20 a useful read.
Good luck!
Hello
I was told yesterday that a genetic test would only be ordered after diagnosis and could only be instructed by a gastroenterologist. 😣
