Brown circles around eyes with Lumigan

YoungontheOutside profile image

Since my consultant switched me to nightly preservative-free single dose Lumigan eye drops, dark brown circles have developed under my eyes and either side of the bridge of my nose. I know that dark circles are a side effect of these drops.

My oh so tactful husband said that he thought I had gone far too heavy on brown eye makeup, and I have to admit it makes me look really unhealthy.

Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this, and is there a way to deal with it? I don’t think my consultant would change my eyedrops lightly because I am experiencing progressive sight loss in one eye (have already had a trabeculectomy) and I think the options for other drops are running out.

I think Lumigan is a trade name for Bimatoprost which is an analogue prostaglandin. Dark circles around eyes is a potential side effect. I’ve been on it or similar, Lantanoprost for 5 yrs and my eyes are a bit sunken and do have dark rings around them.

I don’t think there’s much you can do. I’m not sure they will go if you stop taking the drops either. I splash out and use Touch Eclat cream if I want to cover them up if I’m going out, it’s quite light coverage but effective for me, as I have fine skin and don’t wear much makeup.

Mostly though I just don’t bother day to day, and just avoid mirrors! 🙂

Hello - I’ve been on Bitamoprost for exfoliation glaucoma in left eye and too experienced the dark brown circle around that eye. I’ve been off it now for about 2 months… it’s fading a bit.. I found CC cream excellent for good coverage and I’m pleased about that! I believe that if you put some Vaseline on the area it helps as it acts as a resistant so the skin won’t be affected. I wish I’d known this beforehand! Hope this helps! 🤞🏻🍀

Thanks so much Beecalmed & autumnlass

I rarely wear make up of any kind these days, but I am going to try a couple of creams/lotions and see if it makes a difference.

I will also try the Vaseline before applying the drops and see if that helps

I’ve been on saflutan for 2 months and try to put cream under my eyes as one of side effects is darkening of skin around eyes, also lengthening of eye lashes ( I’m happy for that one )

I had the same a few years ago and my consultant switched me from Lumigan to Monopost for my night time eye drops.

I’m pleased to say that the very dark circles reduced a lot and most importantly, my pressures have remained stable.

I'm taking Lumigan in both eyes and have pronounced darkening of skin. I use Clinique ' Line smoothing concealer' round my eyes, which brightens up the area and reduces the dark appearance. It doesn't disguise it completely but it helps. There are lots of similar products out there.
