Dear Cliffan,

The most recent research I have read is that our genes are predisposed to Fibromyalgia, but a trigger is needed for someone to develop it. Some people in the family may come to have it and some may not, depending on the trigger & the severity of the trauma put on the body (physically & mentally). Members of the family could have the same trigger and one may develop it & the other not.

I am interested to read what others have read and their opinions & comments

Emma

Just seen there are many previous threads that may be of interest on this subject if you search 'hereditary' and here is a link to one of them

many thanks for your quick reply.I will read the link you have given.

reason I ask is my 42yr old daughter is showing the same signs I did around her age.

Well I had heard that it can be hereditary(why do you lot keep landing me with words I have to think about before typing lol). Up until now I was the only family member with it, but my daughter is showing signs now at age 22. She has been very ill of late and this could well be the trigger Emma talks about. I will be very sad if my daughter has it too as she is so young and I know what is coming if she has. But it is not a case of, 'well if I have it, my child WILL get it' because a child you have may never get it. or your mother or father may have it but it does not mean you will have it xxxxx

I'd often wondered about this as my daddy has a number of things happen to him that I would say related to fibro. I've not mentioned it to him as he's a bit of a worry wart anyway, but I would say that his trigger was ME (brought on asian flu christmas of 1994). Interestingly I had that same flu and would say that the fatigue issues and hypersensitivity started about then for me, but that it was a motorcylce acciden march 1997 that triggered the unexplained pain part.

Off to read the link above now :)

I've not long been diagnosed with fibro (aged 24) and my mum has suffered with it since she was about 35. My sisters are also showing some signs of it too, so it seems likely based on my family that there is some genetic link.

My osteopath also told me there is a genetic link, but I don't know how much research there has been around this.

Good luck x

My mum has RA. I personally think that's the link for me. My brother is caeliac so there's a leaky gut connection. I worry about my kids. All 3 have a dairy sensitivity. My eldest had a mild rheumatic fever thing when he was 6. He's

prone to aches and pains. I'm one of 9 and the whole condition is not well accepted.

My problem is I complain too much (apparently)

I think my trigger has been stress and in known food sensitivities that have lowered my immune system. My bodies toxicity lead to glandular fever among other illnesses. I just don't think my body copes well with living lol

Genetically though for me, I think its the rheumatic connection. Rheumatism is a word I heard a lot Growning up. Growing pains, hot water bottles, cricks in the neck. Legs pains, headaches. All very common in our house.

Where I was different was the level of marital stress, inability to cope became overwhelming, so I think adrenal pressure tipped me over into full blown fibro/cfs

in reply to

That's meant to be Un known food sensitivities. Sorry

I have met a lot of people in my work with FMAUK who have more than one member of their family have FM. It certainly seems to be inherited!

I am taking part in the Kings College hospital study (I believe others on this site are also involved) which is looking for genetic links between chronic pain and FM --- so hopefully this study will provide some answers for us!! I personally believe that some people have a certain genetic predisposition to developing FM and due to some "environmental trigger" in our lives the condition "rears it's ugly head!" (eg a particularly stressful event) :)

Although they do not actually been diagnosed with FM, I do have family members with a lot of the symptoms. My sister has had op for disc fusion in her neck. She has extensive neck and shoulder issues, radiating down her arm. She gets problems with her hips, has restless legs and also back issues.

My mum was a nurse and puts a lot of her problems down to the old manual handling. She has had 2 back ops, both hips for bursers, neck and shoulder problems and arthritis now.

My maternal grandmother also had a lot of problems with her back and hips and was always being checked for anaemia as she was very tired.

Somewhere along the line I do believe there is a connection, although I wouldnt tell my sister her symptoms are linked. She is very easily upset.

one of my cousins on my Mum's side has ME and has been in hospital due to it aswell so it's obviously very severe.

We've discussed the possible family link too

Here is Lindsey's (Lindsey Middlemiss - FibroAction) comment on whether Fibromyalgia is hereditary or not taken from a previous discussion on the subject -

"There is a genetic link, but previous generations would have been likely to get a different diagnosis (e.g. Fibrositis - what we now know as Fibromyalgia and Myofascial Pain) if any."
