I had a phased return when I was off for four months this time last year and saw my works occy health to agree with my manager to go on light duties ( i work for the NHS as a cleaner in a hospital ) after a couple months I felt I was unable to work the 5 days a week so I've reduced it to 4 days, everything was fine until about 3 months ago when my Dr reduced my medication so was off for another 7 weeks,i had also had odd days off here and there,I had been signed off for another week the day i got paid when I noticed my wage was short by £300,I went to see my manager who rang payroll and I had been put on basic pay, once I had got to the 6 month mark my full sick pay had gone to basic pay so I returned to work,in the new year I need to decide whether I can still do my job or if I want to accept re-deployment.

I guess it depends on how big the company you work for is and what there sick policy is,most won't keep on paying full pay after 6 months.

If you have a works occy health and a human resources then you need to keep in contact with them, although HR usually get involved after your manager has spoken to them.

I was always led to believe that you couldn't be sacked however it has been known for them to get around it which is why I have been keeping my manager up to date with all appointments, treatments, medication ect and have shown appointment and medical report letters from my health proffessionals.

I hope that's been of some help sharne27.

I hope you have a lovely restful Christmas.

I work for the NHS. As well I saw them for the second time last

Week, I have had the odd day off as well plus 3 weeks certificated

That is over 3 years they even took into account the time I had off

When my mum died.

Anyway the out come for me is that I must take rest breaks, not possible

Also I must have two days off together which is good as that does

Help.

They can ask you to leave, but you can say no, then they try to find you a job

That helps you and our condition, or they try and get shot of you, it's a

Long road can take two and a half years, to prove that you can't do your

Job, some times they pay you off.

I believe according to my occy health because you have a condition that

Is classed as a disability your employer has to treat you as such, it's all to

Do with the disability and diversity act. So they have to be very careful how

They treat you, thy cant just sack you until they have tried to help you every

Way they can, don't worry to much hope that helps a little

Hi

Unfortunately you can be let go when off sick as you are not fulfilling your contract of employment as you are unable to carry out your contracted duties. At least that was what I was told when my employment was terminated for being ill.

Not the answer you probably wanted but generally it depends on the company and your bosses. Whatever, you should talk to your work and keep then up to date and get their feelings on the situation.

Kindest regards

Terry

Hi

I am currently working as a support worker, i think i could do with a support worker myself. The past few months have been hard work. I should work 36 hrs a week buit some weeks my employer would give me 40 to 48 hrs to work, I ended up exausted and had 2 days off sick, I went to my GP he gave me a note to advised them I should stick to my contracted hrs to avoid a flare up of fibromyalgia. My employer chose to ignore the advise note and kept ringing me to do extra, "I know it will take you over your hours, but can you work a 12hr nite shift"!!!! its gone on for months, not only me may i ad. But there is only me with a medical condition. I have put my notice in anyway and start my new job 3rd december, an office job, Sat down allday. Monday to friday, no more nights, no more weekends. My new job is 4 hrs more a week but i will save that on travelling. So heres to 2013. I think it does make a difference on the employer, some are understanding, others dont give a dam. Your employer SHOULD make reasonable changes!!!! you can lose your job if you have loads of time off, but if your employer made reasonable changes then you should be able to managexx

Hello Sharne, here is a link which will take you to the CAB website (Citizen's Advice Bureau), where there is lots of info on being off sick for long periods and relevant details regarding your employers etc -

I hope you find this helpful.

I hope you manage to have a Merry Christmas and I wish you all the best for a Happy New Year too.
