I had really bad dizziness (possibly postural hypotension) when I first had them, for about 4 weeks, although I never did work out if it was starting the amitriptyline, or coming off citalopram so quickly that caused it. I'm ok now though (well, as close to ok as we fibromites get!) xx

It's quite common to have side effects with Amitriptyline, sometimes it takes time to acclimatise. However, if you feel that you really aren't getting on with this med, have a word with your GP about this and about your tummy pains, you might just need something like Omeprazole to protect your stomach, this will calm the acid in your tummy which tends to cause these pains.

Failing that, your GP might change your meds or tell you to persevere a little longer to see if it all settles down. Hope this helps and I hope you feel better soon. xx

Hi SootyB I couldn't get on with ami's didn't have a sore rum I was just totally spaced out and couldn't function. I ended up off work for a week. Sometimes it's difficult to know what to do for the best - do you ride out the side effects and hope the meds help in the long term or do you stop taking them? I stopped after a week but others I know persevered and they worked out for them. I think tho, that you should probably discuss this with your GP as suggested by others. Hope you manage to get some relief from the side effects soon

Hi Nicki, I had some problems with Amitriptyline and have now changed to nortriptyline which is a similar medication but tends to have fewer side effects. It does seem to be helping me sleep without leaving me feeling too spaced out the next day. I actually suggested the change to my GP after reading about this drug on this site. My GP was happy to let me swap, so it might be worth discussing this option with your doctor when you meet. Good luck! Jane x

i think most things given to us have similar side affects, one of the worst being how it makes us feel in the morning. i still just about manage to work, and have bravely come of everything as deep down i dont think they were making a difference.all i take now is my painkillers, i suffer quite badly and rarely sleep but i dont have that hungover feeling at work that most tablets were giving me. my doc has pretty much given up on me and wont refer me back to rhuematology, so thats it i guess.
