Does anyone have problems with water retention, my legs are tree trunks and I can't get any shoes on.

I have very swollen legs ankles and feet, the GP gave me water tablets saying it was fluid, but then I found no increase but my bladder just doesn't want to empty although I feel like I'm bursting. Then I saw the out of hrs GP as I stopped passing water all together, I was sent into hospital and was told every time I passed water it was to be measured by a nurse, I went twice but they only got round to measuring one and said it wasn't enough could I do more!! I finally saw a consultant the next morning 6am when I was in agony as I hadn't had any of my tablets and I was very stiff, I was told not to be such a baby when examined and she was not gentle. She said I could go home as I had been passing water? I said I had done two trickles that's not passing water, but I was ignored. They don't know why my legs are swollen so I'm waiting on a scan. So I have no water tablets and my whole body is now bloated I can't get my shoes on my clothes are too tight, Today the Dr said I can't do anything until you have the scan then told me off for the amount of weight I have put on in a week !!! grrr I can't hold a cup now my hands are so swollen any advice please I'm all alone in an area I don't know having fled from my home. So I'm feeling lost and alone I just feel like there's no point in going on

Hi there. Have they not suggested that you may have Lymphodema. I have it and at the moment my legs are very swollen especially my left leg and it feels dead.My ankle is very swollen as well. Was given elestic support stocking but they started cutting into my leg and making it very painful. Doctor has referred me to McMillan nurses as they run a leg clinic. It seems that people who have had Cancer and had their lymyphatic glands removed have this difficulty with circulation and are helped by attending this clinic. Thank God I haven't had cancer but it can also be an hereditary condition as my mother, sister and my daughter have devloped the same thing albeit not as severe as myself. Have they not suggested that this could be Lymphodeama. I have put a lot of weight on as well but I blame that on tablets I take and sitting around because I am pain with FM.

Just thought I'd suggest this and it may help.

Sometimes I don't recognise my feet, they are that swollen!

Thanks, I'll ask about the Lymphodema but knowing my GP she'll just say well you have fybro there's nothing I can do

Please get a second opinion asap. Calling NHS Direct could be a good idea - 0845 4647.

This is NOT a Fibro symptom and could be serious.

Thank you I will call them, my GP just isn't interested

Hi. I see this was a while ago.but did you ever find out the problem. Your urine flow sounds like a kidney infection probably due to the water tablets. I have a similar problem with swelling. I work on my feet 9 hours a day,i have done for years.one day in feb between the top of foot and my shin started aching to the point i couldn't bear weight on it.gradually over the week my ankle started to swell and was extremely painful. The following week it seemed to spread to my other ankle.then gradually it has spread up my shins to my knees now it affects my whole legs.mostdays i can barely walk and need to use crutches. I went to the docs who origionally gave me gabapentin and naproxin which seemed to have no effect at all. Another doctor then put me on water tablets which didn't help and the next doctor i seen took me off the water tablets as he said it wasn't water retention and those tabs would only damage my kidneys. He put me on amitriplin to be taken only at night and refferred me to the vascular surgeon. The amitriplin doesn't help much as the majority of pain and swelling is a problem during the day which i take cocodomol for which helps slightly. When i attended the vascular surgeon,he checked my legs and my history and requested an abdominal and pelvis ct scan to look for previous dvt. I have not yet got the results yet. This is a nightmare everyday. I have had to cut back my hours at work as i'm in so much pain. If anyone has anything similar or could help at all please get intouch. Thanks for reading folks..
