Not walls, though I sometimes find my self a bit 'off' walking through doorways, and catch the edge of the frame. I do walk into furniture though, usually the end of the bed. That wooden frame can really hurt! For a long time I thought I was just clumsy! Would be interested to hear if this is common. I feel as though I don't always judge spaces / distances as well as I used to.

Ha ha ! I thought it was just me who walked into walls. My son regularly pushes me away because I am heading into him when we are out. I dont have any sense of direction . Good to hear on this site that you are not looney, others do the same things. love to you xx

Have you always had this issue? I have - I've always walked into door frames and catches! - and understand that it may be a consequence of my hypermobility.

No. This condition only started when my fibro, CFS and Neuropathy kicked in. It's weird. I 'catch' door frames and corners of furniture all the time.

I am so pleased I am not the only one.

Have you looked into Positional Cervical Cord Compression and Fibro?

One of the clinical signs that may point towards this issue is a positive Romberg test. This is a test identifying problems with proprioception (the ability to know one's body in space). I think the Wikipedia article explains this test quite well: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rombe...

Ironically - it is good to hear that I am not the only one! My daughter just calls me clumsy and I do the walking into her thing as well - much to her annoyance! It is funny at times - but I do look like a bit battered sometimes with the bruises everywhere. :-)

oh yes ive hit that many door frame, furniture etc, Im interested about the romburg test, as I have spinal cord cysts

I know where you are coming from. I hate door handles and i am always nursing door handle height bruises on both arms from walking into them!!! A while ago my husband had to stop me nearly breaking a door down after a door handle had 'got' me again. I was very depressed at the time.if i lived on my own there would be no door handles in my house. I have query, does anyone else who has these spatial awareness issues take Lyrica? I learnt from this website that the reason i was so clumsy (I had raised it with my GP) could be because of the side effects of the Lyrica so would be interested to know if others have a similar experience.

Haha!! There are other "clumsy" people out there!

I have a tendency to lose my balance just for a second and the result is that I lurch to one side into whatever happens to be there at the time. I also do it when I stand up or turn around.

It's not anything to do with dizziness or anything, it's almost like my leg or legs give way, almost as if the muscles suddenly stop holding me up!

As I say, it only lasts for a second, but it's a pain, especially when I land on something hard!

Take care of you xxx

Oh this is soooooo good to hear. obviously I'm not happy that everyone else is suffering but it feels so good to know I have company. I've been doing this for years I believe they call it ataxic gait and is common in fms sufferers. I have found I don't walk into the person next to me quite so often since I've been using my walking stick but it does still happen.

Wishing you all a bump free day xxx

Thank goodness - i feel like a human pin ball machine sometimes!

Speedqueen - you made me think we should have a set of Mr Men and Little Miss books - dedicated to Fibro. Mr Bump, Little Miss Dizzy, Mr Fog the list is endless - have a great day everyone! xx

yes ive walked in walls before now, but on a bad flare up. i bang into things like dr handles corners of the worktops and things like that...my gp has put on my report to the esa im very clumsey.....

That's very funny Westgate and a good idea too, I've been bumping into walls and door handles and everything all my life, it was embarassing because when i worked befre I was medically retired I used to have scrapes and bumps and skinned arms from walking into my door handles, so I would be embarassed and wear a long sleeve to our morning meetings, because I caught my boss frequently looking agast at them, but since being diagnosed with fibro and all last year, i find I'm quite unsteady on my feel, funnily enough usually if I'm at all steady on my feet it's always (usually anyway) on the days when i've to go for my esa (dla) medical, glad it's not only meeee xxxx

Hello. I too walk into doorways etc. No idea why as thought I had fairly good spacial awareness!! I have always got bruises up my arms.Is it a spacial awareness thing do you think? It is worse when I am tired and then I also fall over as well. When will the diverse symptoms ever end. X

Thank you everybody for your replies. It's wonderful to know that it isn't just me.

Ohhhhhh Lawdy! Gentle hugs to one and all - So it's not just me being a klutz then? The bruises and scrapes I have on my arms, hips, legs and feet are Fibro related walking off-kilter into the door frames etc.?? Am soooooo glad I'm not alone in this!

Love,

Carol xx

I do this all the time too!! It can get very embarrassing when I'm trying to navigate a busy street - I just don't seem to be able to judge people/objects whatsoever!! I bump into something in the flat at least 3 times a day too. I don't know what I can do about it, as it's not like I'm going superfast lol!!

Saying all that though, all of the perfectly healthy people I know are actually just the same!! So I wonder if it's more just a human thing in the end? (Although animals do it too - anyone with a mad cat will know that lol!)

The only big difference between my healthy friends and me is the amount of pain a collision causes in them - they can recover instantaneously, where I often can't.

Interesting! xx

I know I might be a bit out of date with this conversation but walking into door frames is something I have noticed I do as well and I spoke to a person who does the same, she reckons it was because her partner made her slip on ice and injured her tailbone and then I told her that I too injured my tailbone while snowboarding. Funny enough we have only just met but managed to injure our tailbones the same year.

So just out of curiosity and the need to fulfill my tailbone/doorframe theory has anyone also injured their tailbones and then started walking into walls???

Koziaaa profile image
Koziaaa in reply toDebeer

Strangely, I too injured my tailbone years ago! I tend to bump into door frames walls pretty much everything and noticed that often when I walk up the stairs I lurch to one side and drag my arm on the wall.

Not sure if this counts but i always find my self walking through a door frame and hitting my shoulder against it. I guess i calculate distance where i am far away from one side but forget the other. It hurts alot

More than I care to admit! Walls, door frames, tables, chairs. I work in a school and navigating tables which are close together, often leads to at least a handful or bruises over the course of a week. I’m certain the doorframes see me coming and move through... I can’t be that clumsy right?
