Hi Gayle, I had a camera down my throat a few months ago, I opted for sedation as there is no way I would be able to swallow it without. You are not fully under so you can help the camera go down but you dont remember anything. You are fine afterwards, just a bit groggy but not painful at all so dont worry you will be fine.. xx
Hi Gayle, as a vocalist i develpoped noduals on my vocal chords a few yrs ago and had to have a camera down my throte about 10 times, all they do is give you a spray with a numbing spay LOL i dont remember what its called, it dosnt last long and there was no pian or side effects afterwards..
Hope this helps you
CHORLEY
hi thankyou all for your thoughts on it,not had the letter yet so its awaiting game

Hi there gayle56 i worked in Endoscopy for 12 years so if this helps i will tell you what i used to tell my patients, first of all its called an OGD (oesophagogastroduodenoscopy) or upper GI Endoscopy, belive it or not alot of people hold thier breath when the endoscope goes down and its the worse thing you can do so concentrate on your breathing, breath in and out, deep breaths, this will stop you gaging so much but remember gaging is a human reflex and everyone does it naturally when something touches the back of your throat, they will spray your throat with lignacaine, which is a localised anesthetic, which will make your throat very numb, they will ask you to make a swollow, only when it is at the back of your throat it will feel like you cant feel yourself swallowing but just stay calm and consentrate on your breathing, and you will feel like you have swallowed a hard boiled sweet and its in your throat but dont forget it goes down your food pipe not your airway so you can breath normally around the tube, it will take 5 to 10 minutes, they will look at your stomach and your small bowel which is called your (Duodenum),
I too have had an OGD and i practised what i preach and i was back doing my job in 15 minutes,
so to sum it up its NOT painful, alittle discomfort around the ribs as its putting air in to have a proper look round, they dont like giving sedative for this because its a quick procedure, but if you insist to have one they should let you,
good luck hun and hope the results are good, and dont worry you will be fine xxx
Because I have developed a tolerance to sedatives over the years, the sedation didn't work for me. Boo.
I had this done twice as I did have a bleeding gastric ulcer. I was nervous but was told the spray was better as if you did panic while it was down it can make it worse. I managed but although it is not painfull its not that exactly pleasant. What swannie said is so right you have to concentrate hard on the breathing and I also fixed a point on the wall to look at to help the concentration.
Hope it goes ok for you, I'm sure it will
xx
