Yes they are one of the same. The illness used to be referred to more as ME ( Myalgic Encephalomyelitis) however it is named Chronic Fatigue Syndrome more now and referred to more as that. Hope that helps xx
my specialist called it FM and hen wrote CF/ ME on my letter, confused as well ...
thank everyone xxxx
Have been diagnosed with FM and other stuff but find that references to CPS helped with the medical profession as they all seem to recognise the term.
It was decided to rename ME to CFS, i think as it easier for people to say, it has also been suggested that ME/CFS is the same as FMS but I thinbk the jury are still out on that one !!!!!
Chronic fatigue is a symptom. E.g. people with Fibro, MS, etc can have Chronic Fatigue as a symptom.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a diagnosis.
ME used to be called Myalgic Encephalomyelitis, but then people with that diagnosis were found to not have Encephalomyelitis. ME was then renamed Myalgic Encephalopathy, but some people with ME still prefer Myalgic Encephalomyelitis. CFS is also used by many doctors, but many patients do not like the label.
CFS is considered to be more of a "waste-basket" diagnosis. But there is still no test for CFS or ME.
To confuse the picture further, Post-Viral Fatigue Syndrome is the diagnosis sometimes given to people who develop chronic fatigue and other symptoms after a viral infection.
In the UK, CFS/ME is the term used by the NHS and NICE.
The name CFS was devised by psychiatrists in the UK and America to make ME into a non-disease and vague . Encephalomyelitis is likely to be part of ME as Japanese researchers have just found neuroinflammation in brian scans in ME partients.
medical experts have have also found dead cells and damage in the spinal cords of ME patients who died in the UK .
Forgot to add CFS is also a symptom of diabetes and heart disease so It a bit like calling a brain tumour a headache.
