Pip telephone assessment

HiFirst time poster here.

I have a multitude of condition, emphysema, lower back nerve compression ( a result of dystectomy surgery now build up of scar tissue) fibromyalgia and diverticulitis.

Before I was moved on to pip I had higher rate dla but was dropped down to standard on pip so lost my mobility car.

On Friday I had my pip review! I can honestly say I was terrified, so stressed not been sleeping and just generally a bit of a mess.

So Friday morning the assessor phoned and instantly put me at ease ( this was my 4th assessment over a period of 15 years) the lady was really nice, I know doesn't always reflect in the report but she had lots of knowledge of all my conditions which I do think helps.

Anyway my assessment finished after 1hour and 40 minutes ( think she spoke more than me!). She told me she was going to advise dwp to move me to a light touch as it's obvious things will not get better.

My issue is I get confused quite a lot, she ask me about distance I could walk and like a idiot ( I'm still old school and work in feet and inches not metres) told her it was 30m to my car! I was trying to work it out by think so my lounge is 15ft long it's near to double that distance to the car from my door, I also gave her metres I could walk instead of feet. It was only when my daughter came home and asked how it went that she pointed out my car was knowhere near 30m away from the door.

So do any of you lovely people know if I can get this changed or will they just take it as said. I going out of my mind worrying about it.

Hi there and welcome. I would call them tmw and explain the mix up. But I would also write down the correct measurements so you don't get them muddled up again.

They will put down what you told them. They have no choice they have no way of knowing you had made a mistake. So definitely ask them to amend your Q/A response.

Ok. Thanks for that Dizzytwo. Can't believe I got in such a mess over it, my daughter has even been out with tape measure and taken pictures of the distance. I just wasn't sure if they would take it into consideration.

I honestly feel I could not face going to tribunal again, it made me so ill last time. I will calk them first thing tomorrow

Yes how far you can walk is very important to the mobility side of your claim.

If you're unable to walk more than 20 metres, you could qualify for the enhanced rate of PIP. If you can walk more than 20 metres - aided or unaided - you may qualify for the standard rate of PIP.

Don’t you have to be able to walk x distance without pain, reliably and repeatedly?

I guess if you can do that with out pain and safely that would be their bench mark.

But many people with pain /fibro who can walk the 20m still do so with a certain amount of pain and rely either on some kind of aid or companion myself included to help them.

Not every one needs this kind of help. So my thoughts have always been while it may be part of the mobility discriptor for DWP on how far you can walk unaided etc. The assessor will base their findings on how well and reliably you can walk that 20/40m. This is just my own personal opinion.

But if your going on the DWPs written discriptors. That is what they say.

That’s exactly what I meant. DWP just ask ‘can you walk x numbers of metres and don’t make it very clear that this actually means without pain, repeatedly and reliably. I bet a lot of people do not realise this.

Your right, I put down I could walk 20 metres after I have taken pain killers and rubbed voltamo ointment on my hip and knee pain, I got 4 points for that, but didn't get mobility because of bus journeys.

But can you do this repeatedly and reliably?

Are you saying that being able to us a bus negated your claim for the mobility element? That is just ridiculous isn’t it? In that case why are there such a thing as disabled bus passes?

I know, I should have put in an appeal about it!! I was just glad I got the standard daily living as it helps so much, and since it was my first time applying for pip I was happy for that. I will definitely pursue it on my next review.

Just a quick up dateCall pip and spoke to a lady who said she would make a note on the system. She told me not to worry and that it happens a lot.

Over the weekend my daughter measured the distance from my front door to car it is 8.7m, I had said 30m with pain and breathless.
