Unfortunately the only way you'll know is to try it for yourself. We are all so different and drugs affect us all differently. Personally I have used it for a long time without any issues. I would suggest the first time you use it to take it early evening to mitigate any possible sedative affect the following morning and maybe on a day off if you work just to get used to it.

I have taken Amitriptyline for years so I'll share my personal experience. They were a little bit of a struggle to start with, I was sleeping really heavily at the beginning and struggling a touch to get up in the morning, but that only lasted a month or two. As did the slight dizziness I experienced. Like CheetieCat said, try to take it early evening. I still take it in the early evening even now.

I will say though, try to make sure you take the dose each day. I have occasionally missed a dose (due to Fibro Fog) or a half dose (accidentally dropping a tablet that makes up the full dosage and not realising) and the next morning I felt really faint, then sick but after being sick I felt fine. It was bizarre. I felt like I was on a ship in choppy waters 😂

We all react differently to medications though, and you may not experience any of the side effects or you may experience them all. Persevere with them as much as you can, as all medications will make you feel a bit different. But if they're truly not doing the job and are making you feel worse, return to your GP. I wouldn't recommend just quitting them cold turkey.

I took Amitriptyline for over 20 years. It was not until withdrawing from them that I discovered how difficult it could be. I tried twice to come off them without success and then managed a long slow taper starting three years ago. (Hospital Doctors request) I have now been off Ami for 1 year and 4months. I have had no help with this from GP. I always thought Ami was helping me and would not regret taking it. Little did I know how hard it is to come off. In fact HELL !! It could for me go on for another 3 and half years!!

Please, please be careful. Check out Withdrawal. There is a lot of information on the internet and many, many books written on withdrawing from antidepressants, including Amitriptyline.

You are very wise to ? this drug.

I was requested to do so on Hospital Discharge letter. After 6 weeks in three hospitals due to sudden cardiac arrest. No Doctor has ever spoken to me face to face about taking amitriptyline. I asked for it due to back pain.

Hi, amitriptyline did make me sleep extremely well and for a few days helped the pain but then it stopped helping the pain and I didn't like the zombie feeling in the day so I came off it after a few months. I generally don't tolerate prescription pills so I'm not a great example lol! Many people tolerate it well though so it's worth a try. My withdrawal after only a few months was tolerable and relatively short unlike poor Rosy_Holly 😔. Best of luck with whatever you decide 🤞👍 x

I've been on Amitriptyline for over 10 years, had to come off it twice to have children. I didn't have any trouble coming off it. I did have issues the first pregnancy but that was because I had to come off Gabapentin aswell. Although I always give myself 10x longer than the GP suggests to come off things anyway, I don't need unnecessary problems!Sideeffects like drowsiness the next day extremely common but this does wear off in time, I take mine at 8.30 in the evening. Dry mouth and eyes can be a problem and it does have cognitive effects but ironically I'm not clear about those! Can impair cognitive function but with fibro fog etc it's hard to tell.

I took Amytriptyline for a few years for Fibro. Its very good for inducing sleep, but I found it less effective for pain. I found I quickly built up a tolerance to it and had to keep increasing the dose.

I got some pretty unplesant side effects, increased sweating, which happens to me with every antidepressant I've tried, dry mouth, feeling like I was walking through treacle. In the end the side effects outweighed the benefits so came off of them.

Funnily enough I got diagnosed with vestibular migraines a couple of years ago and Amytriptyline was one of the drugs I tried to prevent them. Even at a much lower dose than I took for Fibro they gave me a rapid heartbeat, palpitations, the shakes and ironically, headaches. So had to quit that one. I clearly can't tolerate Amytriptyline now.

Second try with this drug. I am on the very low pain dose as opposed to the higher antidepressant dose, the aim is to relieve my pain at bedtime. I was put on it a second time in the hope that I could come off my nightime Tramadol. Sadly, it doesn't work for pain but it does make me sleepy and if I use that hour, I will drop off to sleep ...... But then, I wake up 4-5 hours later in a lot of pain. I have one known side effect, it affects my bladder. If you think that a normal "flow" is like turning a tap full on ..... This drug causes me to slowly dribble! A loo trip can take ten minutes!!

I have been taking Amitriptyline for several years now, I take 50 mg at night, it helps me sleep and helps with the pain too. I get a dry mouth (could be caused by one of my inhalers for COPD or both) and as LhasaMomma said it has reduced the flow rate of my urine. Apart from that I don't have any other side effects and I'm quite happy to keep on talking it.

I've been taken Amitriptyline for 30 years. Because of my age, 70 plus! the dosis has been reduced to 35mg in the evening, as recomended by the consultat The only side effect I had encounter, has been dry mouth and dry eyes. Otherwise, it's helped me, so as Welshcatlady, I'm happy to continue taken it.

Hi Juciy123, If your not sure,don't take it, otherwise you won't relax and get the full effect, which is to send you into a nice sleep, I take it about 10pm but am still awake now , I take enough pain meds to fell an elephant along side anti depression which is also suposed to relax as well, I think you just have to do what you feel is okay,
