Hi, I itch quite a lot of the time, usually my hands and knees when they are beginning to swell up. Although I do itch on my scalp and anywhere on my body for no apparent reason at any time of the day, I notice it more if I am warm. The only thing I have found to relieve it at all are wet wipes. I wipe wherever I itch with wet wipes and get relief for a short while. It is not ideal but it helps me.
Yep sometimes drives me mad and yes if have bath water too hot sets it off ☹️also I read that medication can do this so (think my BP tablets can do this especially my legs x
Me too...pleased its not just me i'm absolutely drained nauseous with flu like symptoms too after having a bath it takes it out of me for the rest of the day!.. live alone so dont like to leave it until the evening plus i wake next day with a banging headache if i bathe i the evening. I too then get bad itching all over my body esp my ankles torso and back areas with no rash ect..same in hot weather...also feels prickly.
But if you think it is opiate based meds making you itch…get medical advice…don’t just stop that med…withdrawal symptoms even from low doses are a thousand times worse than itching!
But do remember…it could just be dry skin….I don’t mean obviously dry flaky skin but just normal looking skin can really itch…..try any mild Moisturiser before seeking advice. …& keep it in the fridge!
Hi Fibro 1966I notice I itch more if my bath is as warm as I like it. Stress and change of temperature. Also if I eat more sugar in foods or get less sleep. Getting more sleep helps but sometimes easier said than done.
For be its a sign to slow down, get sleep or head for nature.
Yeah I often itch too. It can be pain but my body interpreting it as a need to itch. I have found chlorphenamine quite helpful so it may be a histamine reaction.
I find my medication makes me itch to the point my scalp will bleed or I scratch the skin on my arms and make them sore. I had a stroke which altered my sensations, have diabetic neuropathy and fibromyalgia so any of these can cause itching but I'm sure it's my meds. I take blood pressure, anti platelet, thyroxine, insulin and tramadol. Not much calms it sadly. I do occasionally take antihistamines.
just a quick reply as got to go to work but I’ve always had sensitive skin but this has got considerably worse since just before Christmas. I’m scratching myself so much at first I thought maybe I need to change my washing capsules but it’s not that, my eyes too have become very itchy(I already take Fenofexodine every day) but I am getting really red sore itchy eyes as well as all over itching. I have suffered and I mean suffered from excessive sweating for about 15 odd years. I thought in the early days it was due to the menopause but have ruled that out, then my meds but have changed those over the years and then a few days ago I read it is actually one of the issues with fibromyalgia so??? 👋
I get severe itching from time to time on just one arm. It is a burning intense itch that drives me mad. Trouble is scratching just makes it worse. I put a towel or flannel on it soaked in ice cold water which seems to calm it down. (I appreciate that’s not always easy depending upon where the itch is on your body!). Once it’s calmed down a bit I apply some anti itch cream - Eurax is the best. I understand from GP that it caused by irritation of the nerve endings.
Good luck, health and happiness to all fibro sufferers!❤️
I’m the same it’s just one arm, it drives me mad, there’s no rash, spots, nothing! I didn’t realise it was connected to my fibro until I’ve just read this! X
I had terrible itching on the forearm of the arm that had Carplal Tunnel Syndrome….sue enough the itching disappeared after I had the decompression surgery, but that is slowly failing, and the itching is returning. So compromised nerve endings could be the answer.!
Hi Fibro1966,I have had really itchy skin on and off for the last few years. Each bout lasts about 18 months. Absolutely nothing on the skin, no rash, spots hives, dermatitis etc. The itching drove me mad on my arms and legs. I was lucky to see a doctor at my practice who specialises in skin complaints. She said it probably a problem with the nerve endings in the itchy areas and recommended using 1% Menthol Cream which has a cooling, calming affect on the skin. I used a brand called Arjun which I got on prescription but you might be able to get it over the counter at your pharmacy. I found it really helped and carried a small pot with me to use when needed. The doctor also suggested holding something cold eg a bag of frozen peas in a towel against the skin to calm the nerves. Gently slapping the skin rather than scratching causes less damage to the skin surface & gives some release from the itchiness.
This might be worth a try....before seeing the specialist doctor I was ready to rip my skin off to get rid of the itchiness. I hope something works for you.
hi yes unfortunately the itch is a Fibro thing , it comes and goes. I start a new drug LDN ( please google it) I’m hoping it helps . It sounds like a wonder drug . £50 for a consultation then £22.50 a month. It’s not licensed for Fibro but initial findings are very positive. It’s very old drug and and not many side effects, it is a very safe drug too. I start it in a few days. Good luck 🤞
Yes! It’s very annoying and painful, it just goes on, I get it on my legs specially my thighs and arms, and yes it’s worse for me after a warm shower, I noticed loose cotton clothes does not aggravate it intensely after a shower, however I do also get it just sitting down or when I go to bed, I was thinking about posting on this group as it’s been getting worse over the past few weeks, not sure I have any advice as I am still trying to find something that works, lots of gentle hugs xx
Hya i’ve suffered with chronic itching for years and it drives me crazy it starts when i go to bed i have a hairbrush and i use it to get the itch scratched until i’m sore my scalp starts first then my neck and goes down to my feet i’m going for tests soon to see if i’m intolerant to Gluten, wheat fructose and lactose as when i read up on these substances they all seem to make you itch so il keep you posted
I get very itchy and as soon as I itch the place it moves so it just goes on . I could have clawed my neck last week it was so bad I'm sure it just likes to play tricks with me jumping all over my body . Good luck x
I find I itch all over especislky when in. Ed. I use a silk duvet cover and double rinse it but makes no difference. I tend not to over wash: shower etc as it just dries skin out . I use E45 shower cream and non bio washing machine liquid.
Gp prescribed oatmeal cream( can’t remember name atm- am stuck in bed!) it helps a bit along with generic piriton.
I have itched for years and use eurax, aveeno cream and epimax wash cream but I can't say they are a cure.I used to scratch my head so much I have lost a lot of hair which has not grown back so be aware of this.
I have noticed that the itching coencides with where my fibro pain affects me more.
I don't have a sweating problem but I find that stress and getting hot in bed makes it worse, also certain foods.
I take an antihistamine everyday and pregablin 125grams daily. No other prescription drugs except eye drops and gel for very dry eyes.
Yes I could rip my arms off at night especially. Its more of a pinging, itchy sensation . Meanwhile, I recently had a full blood count done and they found high liver enzymes that apparently causes itching too, so maybe get yours checked. Its a sign of high cholesterol and fatty liver !
Hi I’m suffering with the awful itch too. All over my body especially when I’m warm. Worst itch is on the ball of my left foot which Gp told me it’s neuropathy. I get this often and I rub it so hard on carpet it bleeds! I can’t have my foot under the bed covers because it gets worse when warm. I have also scratched my scalp bald in one area which is so embarrassing. Gp wasn’t helpful so It’s good to hear everyone’s thoughts. Thank you. Sorry I don’t have any advice to help anyone. Sending healing thoughts
I wonder if it has to do with release of free radicals, "mast cells" release/ histamine release I keep encountering being discussed in different research I have read about Fibromyalgia over recent years.
The other theory of the cause of Fibro that recent keeps coming up more:
Fibromyalgia people at any instance of Fight/flight/freeze we release 8-10x the amount of neurotransmitters such as cortisol, adrenaline, noradrenaline, and substance P then an average person.
This is one theory that is really making sense to me. As any time I get a tiny fright like a spider or even think a car is gonna hit me. My body severely goes stiff afterwards.
Also makes me wonder if too much of some of these like the cortisol or adrenaline would make us itchy and red and sweaty!!
Have you tried any oils? Baby oil? Olive oil that doesn't have a strong scent? Do they have Vick's Vapor rub across the pond, if you don't mind the scent. Good back scratcher with some oil on it or some one to rub it good into your back. Embarrassing in public when it gets at those private spots. Are you using any powders? I personally wouldn't unless you can get away with it.
I get neuropathic itch above my elbow on my forearm. Its an itch i daren't scratch. If I even slightly itch it the pain is uncontrollable. I have to run water on it and blow it that is the only form of easing it. Along with the gnawing pain my skin breaks with itching. Its the proverbial itch you cannot scratch.
