Hi all Fibro/cfs person here. Had it for years. I wanted to ask is anyone else not able to tolerate B vits. I seem to take a downturn if I take them. Thank you

I have both Vitamin B 12 Deficiency and Folate Deficiency, which caused Anaemias . I don't have Pernicious Anaemia I just have other malabsorption and metabolic problems . I also have a MTHFR gene mutation so I can't absorb oral folic acidI get Vitamin B 12 injections every 6-8 weeks because my Deficiency causes neurological symptoms in my case.

I also need to take Methylcobalamine sublingual B12 supplements each day.

I get a Folate and Iron infusion every three months and have to top this up with Methylfolate supplements ( active Folate) each day to help .

I am at the more extreme end because I also have medically treated enzyme insufficiency, but they did find that it wasn't just that I couldn't absorb enough B vitamins , Folate or Iron from food but that I couldn't metabolise enough of what I absorbed into an active form to use, so all of my prescribed and Specialist recommended Vitamin supplements are of an active and liquid . Spray sublingual form now.

My Fibromyalgia flares and daily fatigue and pain have improved a great deal since getting these nutritional problems sorted out.

I have found that having additional vitamin D, magnesium and potassium have been helping to lessen the muscle pain.

Hi, many cannot tolerate methylated B vitamins as they do not need additional methyl groups or cannot process them well. It can be due to a combination of polymorphisms (SNPs), such as MTHFR, but not always and not only that one, and having SNPs doesn't necessarily mean that you can't tolerate methyl - but it is always a good idea to only add one supplement at a time and listen to your body, so if you don't do well so be it. You may also be low in cofactors, such as magnesium. Are you symptomatic and did you test low for some or all B vits? If you do need them, there are other options (cyanocobalamin and hydroxocobalamin forms of B12, for example). In what way do you take a downturn? If you are symptomatic from low B12 then treatment will likely make you worse before you get better, as the nerves start to repair, and that can be painful and lengthy. But if you are getting hyper and anxious it is likely too much methyl for you to handle at this point. Which have you been taking and how much of them? Best wishes
