I have a bony lump about 3-4 cm’s wide, sort of thumb shaped going across the very bottom of my ribs at the front, it’s under where my bra goes. I’ve seen a doctor who told me it’s my rib!
So astonished by his diagnosis,I said at 61 years of age I’ve suddenly over the last year green a fully central new rib!?
he asked me “what do you want me to do? Send you for an X-ray? Which I have had
I’m just wondering if anyone else has this, it’s not painful,,just tender when touched too much. But it makes me uncomfortable when wearing a bra(hate wearing one anyway) and bending over. Other than that, I’ve seen posts about costochrondritis on here, but this lump doesn’t seem to match?
I’m going to check up on the X-ray results and try to get a second opinion, if I can get an appointment at my docs, who are triaging appointments for the most important and not doing others! <Admin: removed comment>
Anyone got any other ideas?

Hi, I can assure you this is not to do with fibro. From what you describe it is not something that is causing you undue distress or discomfort and the dr thinks it is a Rib. If the Xray confirms this to them then all you can ask is for another opinion.
Hi, I have costochondritis and I have a lump, my lump is higher up, above the top of a bra to the left side of a sternum, it feels like a bit of rib sticking out of my chest. I got this after an accident at work tho, if I overdo it it swells around it and becomes very sore. I can no longer wear a bra.
I do believe this is quite normal .called ixiphoid process which is smallest region of sternum.made of cartilage at birth and develops into bone at adulthood
Please be assured that you have not grown a central rib.
You have a bony protrusion attached to the bottom of your sternum called the xiphoid process. Sudden, sharp radiating pain from the area (xiphoidalgia) is not that uncommon.
I have suffered symptoms for many years and would certainly not rule out a connection with fibromyalgia. It is most easily triggered by twisting movement of the upper torso.
hello yes I have several lumps but just below my ribs where they meet the diaphragm and these are quite painful to touch I think these are what is called muscle knots or trigger points and can cause pain in other parts of the body
Hi mrspippy, I wonder, have you lost weight, or are redistributing weight differently due to being potentially post menopause now? Sometimes for us ladies, our top half can lose muscle and fat and it sort of drops into the tummy waist area? And then you say, ooh, hello ribs, what's going on here?
I can tell you, if you start poking and investigating lumps and notches, you will make em hurt. We fibros are such sensitive souls. And then your fibro will enjoy making a meal of that hurt for as long as it feels like it, and longer if you keep checking and poking at it. I mean this kindly because it's what we do when we are worried. If the GP says they are not worried, I'd try to not worry too and leave it alone. Then if it's still troublesome a few months hence, or the boney area is growing, go back and tell exactly what is now happening.
It is important for fibro's to have new symptoms checked. Sometimes they can be fixed and should be fixed so don't be put of by your Dr seeming to not be interested. If there is something to worry about, I expect the Dr will take action.
Also, if you sleep on your front, and you're skinny, that can cause ribs to hurt so try to be aware of anything you are doing that might be making you more aware of this area.
