Finally received confirmation of Fibromyalgia and been given Amitriptyline wondered anyone finds this helps with their pain?

I wish it was otherwise for you as fibromyalgia is a horrible disease.

I have heard the medication you have been given increases the weight. I’d like to know also about this med and/or any other meds with minimum side effects. I struggle to handle this level of pain any more and thinking of approaching my GP

Hasn't made me put on weight but then I've been on it for 15 years. It helps me sleep by giving me a sleep window although it doesn't help me stay asleep.

Amitriptyline has all sorts of uses, like it can treat gastrointestinal problems, act at an anti-depressant at high doses, chronic pain at low doses. Im on a middle sort dose. Sadly I have IBS and Bladder problems and it doesn't seem to help them but it obviously helps others.

Hello. I can’t get on with this medication. However duloxetine is one that I found with much better side effects for me and from what I’ve read is most commonly used and effective for fibromyalgia 🤷🏻‍♀️ Everyone is different. However I’m still in pain and doesn’t nothing takes the spasms away. Xxx

Hi,I am just wondering how are you getting on with duloxetine as my GP wants to put me on it instead of Amitriptyline. Can you drive with duloxetine?

Good morning, I have been taking Amitriptyline since I was first diagnosed, probably 3 or 4 years. I started on 10mg at night and slowly increased to 50mg at night. I have no side effects, and it helps me sleep, although only for 3 -5 hours, and also helps with the pain too. I haven't put on any weight. A week or so ago I forgot to take my tablet, and paid for it the next day with increased pain. Some people have pretty bad side effects, but I would certainly give it a try, as with all meds it's a case of trial and error, what effects some badly don't effect others. x

I am glad you have got confirmation now and see how you get on with the meds, it can be trial and error along the way , but hoping this helps you , can always book back in with GP if you’ve any concerns, me personally I’ve always been told too give new meds a couple of weeks to start working and also too pick up the phone and ask for advice at any time which does put your mind at rest ,hope you find the forum helpful, take care .

Hi, I've been on this drug nearly thirty years and without it I would not have had a life.I've managed to keep active by getting enough rest at night and it helps my pain.

Amitriptyline is used nowadays as a muscle relaxant although it also used to be used as a fairly mild antidepressant. It can help you sleep.

It worked for me by taking 10mgs at night 1/2 hour before bed for a short time. However I then had to increase the dosage by 10mgs until I found a dosage to suit me. at one time I was taking 100mgs for many years. This drug although it can be used as an anti depressant it is very useful for fibro patients as it is given for nerve pain thus aiding sleep thus reducing fibro pain.

Hi am 6 days in taking,10mg just before bed but I'm a bit disappointed that again this morning woke early with my back absolutely aching, maybe will need to up the dose as well

Yes if you've had no side effects I would suggest upping the dose to 20mgs and see how it goes. Best of luck.

Yes it does. and helps with sleep too. Why I quit using it was it effected my blood sugar. Meaning I noted my moods changed. Only drug that I know that helps with pain sleep and depression. If you want to quit taking it. it's not dangerous like SNRI or SSRI

It is in old class of pharmacetics called Tricylicines.
