Ketomin & FIBROMYALGIA
It was offered to me by my pain consultant but I declined it for fear of "ketamine bladder." I was an A&E nurse for 15 years and never want to experience ketamine bladder, it looks horrendous and can lead to surgery. I understand the benefits of ketamine but it's not without its risks.
Thank you for your quick reply on ketamine the condition you are on about sounds really nasty and something I don't really want to have got enough going on in my life at the moment. I go to see my consultant early next month so I will take it up with him and run with his advice. My note book will be turning into a novel soon maybe a best seller 😁 thanks again for your advice I really appreciate it try to enjoy the rest of your day bye bye 👋
Ketamine infusion for pain management tends to be just a few spread over a number of weeks - sometimes even months between each doses, the risk for any bladder complications is minimal if any at all.The idea is to reset the wiring in the brain and this reduce pain after some time.
Ketamine can work for some people this way, it doesn’t work for everyone.
There is also research into using LSD and magic mushrooms the same way - all in a safe, controlled and prescribed hospital setting.
Ketamine is the only one of these licensed here in UK so far for pain management (anxiety and depression are also included in this research)
If you are interested in looking into Ketamine infusions, talk to your consultant about a referral to a pain clinic who do these.
Using Ketamine as a daily pain relief, long term however is not safe, precisely because of the side effects it can cause on the bladder.
I have been prescribed Ketamine many times, but only short periods, usually 1-2 weeks, for acute, severe pain. I have not had Ketamine infusions, but it’s on my list of ‘interesting things I might try’ - once the world is a bit more normal again!
That is interesting information ..
I am treated successfully with lidocaine infusions for erythromelalgia. I tend to have two infusions a year. It helps tremendously.
I have also tried lidocaine - not as infusions but as injections into trigger points into my back and neck. Many small injections, 15-20 injections each time. A rather painful procedure...and sadly little effect..maybe a little reduced pain the first few days after the first time. Then I had to wait more than 6 months for next appointment as waiting list was so long. Second and third time - no effect. After that I gave up. Travelling into hospital with hospital transport made the whole thing a huge ordeal and I didn’t push for anything else, was just discharged from pain clinic.
Ketomin is a very strong opioid that is a hallucinogenic and used to tranquillise horses. Ambulance Paramedics don’t even stock it and a specially trained trauma specialist needs to be called. It incapacitates so unless you want to live your life as a zombie it’s probably the last thing you’d choose for an improvement in quality of life.
No I don't want to live my life a zombie but I'm just at my wit's end and don't know which way to turn my fibro is literally ruining what life I've got left. I'm constantly in pain I can't get a proper night's sleep I'm getting woken up at night with it I'm open to any suggestions for when I see my consultant at the end of the month what's anyone got
