Hi Everyone. This is my first post although I have been lurking a while.

I would like to start getting myself a bit fitter. I currently do a few minutes of pilates a couple of mornings a week but would like to take up something like cycling or walkin. Im just not sure where to begin or how much is a good starting point Has,anyone any hints and tips to share. I just dont want to end up too tired to function

Many thanks

Hi

I find exercise really helps and try to do something everyday. Personally I would start with the walking & gradually build up distance at your own pace. And then when you are more active gradually start adding other activities in. I walk & do yoga which I find helps in so many ways. I’ve also started Hitt classes during lockdown. Something I thought I’d never get back to doing. Good luck

Thanks. I will take a look at the apps. I used to go to yoga classes before we were in lockdown. They still haven’t restarted but I used to find i was shattered the next day which is why I do just a few minutes of Pilates at home which seems to be better.

I just want to build my stamina up and do something that was a little more helpful to my cardiovascular system. So walking may be the best place to start.

I got myself a fitness tracker & found this really helped, I’m able to see what I’ve done & I find it easier to set goals to work towards.

My husband and myself started walking a few years back because we were both really unfit. We went to a country park for exercise, and began by walking short distances and built it up, a little further each time. Now we go there quite often and do a fairly long walk, (well long for us), and we spend at least 2 hours in park. We do stop for rests on the way round, and feed the birds and squirrels. We find that looking at the natural beauty in the park, flora and fauna, takes our minds off the walking, so makes it a lot easier for us.

Walking is the cheapest option, it doesn't need any specialist equipment (unless you are thinking of long distance or hillwalking). Start small and build up, but listen to your body and don't push too hard. Personally, I find walking to my local supermarket is more than enough for me!

Cycling can be iffy, drivers are not kind to cyclists and will cut you up or force you into the gutters.

Does it have to be outdoors? There is Yoga, Tai Chi and even bellydance. Bellydance, apart from being fun, is low impact and fairly aerobic, and exercises all of you, helping to build a strong core and increasing flexibility.

Hope this helps,

Cheers, Midori
