Hi,

I am new to all this. After months of blood tests, x-rays, orthopeodic appointments and more. I have now been diagnosed with FM a month ago after being seen by the Rhematology consultant. They have referred me to pain management and also sent me away with Amitriptyline 10mg one tablet at night. So far I have had one tablet one night and yesterday had Two tablets as i was told may need to increase dose. However so far i have no faith in it as i still wake up with stiffness and pain widespread also did'nt see any difference in it making me sleepy other than my usual sleep routine. Has anyone else been or have had simalar experience.

Hi

I'm sorry you have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, it's horrible isn't it? If these meds don't work go back to your GP, when you see pain management write everything down so you don't forget and take someone with you as an advocate.

Pain meds I'm on are oramorph, zomorph, duloxetine, indometacin, codeine and nortriptyline, these only take the edge off so that I can get out if bed in a morning though this morning I couldn't even do that!! I do have many conditions which if course doesn't help. Please take care. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx

Hi there, your medication could take up to 6 weeks before you find out if it may help you or not. I'm sorry if you thought one pill would make you feel better. Sadly that's not going to happen if only.

There is no one pill that will make you feel better I'm afraid. It's a case of trial and error. I've had Fibro for 35 years and I hate to be the one to say this but there is no miracle cure or medication for fibro that would make you feel better after taking just one pill.

I would say stick with it for a few weeks abd if you feel no better go back and talk it over with your GP :) xx

Hi, I am exactly the same as you, same medication and told to up it to 20mg. I still struggle to fall asleep due to the pain, when i do fall asleep it is restless and then im up again. Was woken up through the night last night with cramp in my bicep. First ever time i experienced that. I have to try 10 - 20 mg of Amitriptyline for 6 month before i see my rheumatologist again 😣 x

It may make you feel strange for the first week or two, it is an anti depressant and this can be the side effects but hopefully it won’t last forever try persevere x

Welcome to the club no one really wants to join!

Amitryptiline was one of the first medications I was given. It really disagreed with me - I kept falling over. Recently, I went onto one of the medical websites that is a reference for doctors, etc. Amitryptiline is one of the older tricyclic antidepressants that was used to treat FM by slowing down the neural pathways that bring pain to our notice. Since then, several SSRI's (that work on improving your ability to access Serotonin - a 'happiness' hormone proven to decrease our experience of pain) and, more recently, SNRI's - such as Duloxetine - that work with both Serotonin and Norepinephrine (Noradrenalin in 'old money'), in uch the same way that the tricyclics (incl. Amitriptiline) used to.

In theory, the newer drugs are supposed to be more effective in dealing with the symptoms of FM (there remains 'no known cause' for the condition), while having fewer side-effects. However, although I found Duloxetine really helpful, I suffered awful side-effects both getting on them, and coming off.

So, if Amitriptyline doesn't help you, or the side-effects are impacting your life even more than the FM, ask your GP to see if there's another version you can try.

Some people get relief on their first medication, with no side-effects. Unfortunately, it sounds as if you're not one of those lucky ones.

Whatever you choose, I wish you well - and, remember, we're all here to help each other.

Best wishes, dee

It can take a few weeks to kick in if you take 2 at about 8 pm won’t feel hung over in morning. Some people on huge doses but I found 50 mgs too much as was dozy on way to work. They do say it’s mostly trial and error as what works for one person may not help another. Could try non steroidal for knee pain and something else for Fibro pains. CBD oils can help but not available on prescription.

You have had loads of tests by the conventional medical consultants. You have now been given a diagnosis.

Amitriptyline 10mg is used as a pain killer at this dosage.

nhs.uk/medicines/amitriptyl...

Drugs do not teach you to modify how you do things. Drugs can in the long term make what you have worse. As many people have found out to their cost. I am known for my views on pain killers so you need to take my bias into account.

You have not tried a chiropractor. Nor have you tried a sports massage therapist. Nor have you tried an Alexander technique teacher.

You need sleep for the fine control of muscles. You are in pain. This interferes with sleep. Have you tried to find ways of catching up on lost sleep?

You have developed faulty muscle movements. I expect no one you have spoken to in conventional medicine has discussed this with you. This is not surprising because many medical consultants have no knowledge of how muscle movement can contribute to pain.

I have suggested three therapists to try. They may or may not be helpful. The following youtube video may be helpful in understanding about muscle usage.

Thank you Johnsmith you sound like some very thoughts that I have been running over and over again in my head. I just can't explain it (explained all in one go). I will look into the three therapist you have suggested. Thank you again.
