I've had three siblings who have died of cancer my father my sister and my brother now I always think if it was one of my siblings you could put it down to pure bad luck in life yet when it's three it makes you sit up and think.
I rarely drink I don't smoke and never have done as I have Asthma but I'm your average Joe Bloggs yet I feel what are the chances of myself contracting cancer, its my worst nightmare and I do worry about it.
I try not to think about it yet can anyone tell me what help and advice can I get as I feel I don't get the right help I need from my own GP as I feel I'm not really been listened too so I never go to my Dr's.

I can honestly understand your worry. My husband's father died of Prostrate cancer, his one younger brother of oesophagus cancer, another younger brother is probably terminally ill with bladder and prostrate cancer and my husband has prostrate cancer which starts to make me think there is some genetic problem. Strangely the only other sibling the youngest who smokes like a chimney and drinks like a fish is cancer free!
On my mother's side my Mom died if stomach cancer as did three siblings, another leukemia and another bladder cancer and both grandparents on my Dad's side . It actually makes me glad we didn't have children.
I know my poor husband and his brother think every twinge is the cancer starting to activate again and as in my brother in law's case it does seem to be the case.
If the worry about it seems to be overtaking you could you perhaps talk to someone about having some counselling so you can rationalise and live more easily with your fears. Sometimes unfortunately people have found they have needed to change doctors to get the help they require. It seems by looking after your health you are doing everything possible yourself. I found I worry less about my health since I took on the notion of just taking every day at a time and not worrying about the future as I can do little about it and worrying was spoiling the present. Thinking of you.x
Thank you for those kind words.... I'm the last in line of our family (The Youngest) and when this happens it does make you wonder if your next regardless you hardly drink don't smoke and don't do drugs but I have no faith in Dr's at times as you feel they don't listen yet you hear on radio or see on TV that if you feel any lumps or bumps that shouldn't be there see your GP.... I have an enlarged prostrate which I'm supposed to have regular 6 month blood tests..... I had to inform the GP on this so how bad is that and I've had one in 3 years..... But I'm still here and I guess that's a good thing.
My husband was having a blood test quite regularly with our previous long term GP because of his Dad dying if prostrate cancer. That ceased when he retired and to be quite honest perhaps my husband should have told the new doctors about this but didn't.
He was lucky in so much as when he went to the doctor's with symptoms it was a young doctor seeing whether she wanted to be a GP and was on her last few weeks. His prostrate was actually smooth which normally means no cancer and she could have sent him in his way but she decided to send off blood tests and was shocked when they came back positive. As it was coming up to Christmas there was a delay in getting an emergency MRI which should be done in 2 weeks. In the end we accepted an appointment on Christmas Eve late which if course no one else wanted.
I have to say once he was in the system the care has been good and the majority of people who I know (and unfortunately I know too many) say their treatment has been excellent. I think if you are ever really worried you must make a nuisance of yourself, my one friend doesn't and gets nothing my other friend does and gets every test. Take care.x
Perhaps contact some of the cancer charities like McMillan Cancer, Cancer Research or Marie Curie, who may either be able to help you or to point you in the right direction for more information and advice and guidance. x

Hi
I can understand how you feel. I know of people who get regular check ups like prostate , mammogram ,colonoscopy etc. It might be worth enquiring. Love and hugs Lynne xxxx
Hi Geordie and welcome to our community. As this is a fibromyalgia community and not a cancer one, you may find it useful to join a HU Cancer community.
" Cancer and fibromyalgia seem to be distinctive health problems, but they have the same underlying cause - dysautonomia"
there are people that propose this theory but it does not as far a I am aware have any concrete foundation. Certainly the research for the CSS theory is a lot more advanced.
We do not consider any link between cancer and fibromyalgia and often we use the two as examples of conditions that are progressive or not progressive from a medical perspective.
there has been a lot of research on fibromyalgia and while we are not there yet the direction is towards the brain / CNS having an issue and not AI / dysautonomia. Do not mind being proven wrong if our knowledge is increased but where the research is at present is where it is at.
There are some pain scientists/ researchers that are putting forward the theory that fibro, ibs, Vulvodynia may be conditions that are linked and resulting from the bodies processing of pain being hyper sensitised. So these conditions may be aspects of the same underlying cause. This while logically explained and having merit does not have the research there yet but it is also moving in the right direction.
Research will eventually allow us to understand the merits of these theories with avenues being disproved and conclusions reached.
I have lost 98% of family and relatives to all types of cancer(my dad’s side worse than mother’s) the remaining 2% to heart disease AI Freidrichs Ataxia and other diseases.
My best advice would be to see a cancer specialist (private if possible) an Oncogist.
Prepare notes of all relatives/family with ages relationships to you and ages plus specific cancers they had of as many as you can recall to hand to the doctor. This will be essential to what assessment can be made about you.
I’m one of the few people that at age 10 I decided NOT to seek treatment for invasive cancer as all of my loved did and the treatment just added to their suffering and no chance to survive anyway.
As mentioned before joining the Cancer site will be beneficial to you as well.
That wasn't my reply that was sent to me, but to me cancer can be a killer if not caught in time... Losing 3 members of my family to it isn't good and I'm the last of my family and the youngest.... I never dwell on it but I find when you hear on the radio see on TV and these people tell you what to do should you find any lumps or bumps were there shouldn't be go and see your GP straight away...... Maybe our GP's should take us seriously at times instead of misdiagnosed symptoms and take these pills they'll help (Not)....
