Anyone else having real difficult losing weight, and (slightly unrelated) frequent headaches/nose bleeds?

Hi all,

I'm new here, but was diagnosed about a year ago after having symptoms for years - I am 24.

I have been exercising/eating well for about a month now and have not lost a single lb - has anyone else found losing weight difficult?

On a slightly unrelated note, I've also been having a lot of painful headaches (sometimes lasting for around a week). I've also been having nose bleeds. Have never experienced headaches or nose bleeds before so wondering if this could be related to fibromyalgia? Please let me know if you've experienced similar, and if not I will maybe go and see my GP if it's likely unrelated.

Thanks so much

Hi ya, I have learnt only recently as diagnosed in feb 2019, that you can’t just assume everything is down to fibromyalgia. If you are suffering from anything always consult your doctor don’t leave it and put it down to fibromyalgia as even though it is a complex illness you could have something else that has similar symptoms. Hope this helps a bit, this site for information and to know you are not alone. Take care xx

Hi check the side effects of medication. If you are on Pregabalin this may explain why you are unable to loose weight.

If you are on codeine although this is for pain relief it can cause headaches in some people.

Hope this helps.

agni63 I am actually not on any medication - the doctor offered and I said I would try to manage without, as I don't want to become dependent. I'm quite lucky that, other than bad flare ups every few weeks, for the most part I can cope with the pain without medication. And if I ever feel like I need to start taking something, the offer is always there from my GP

I have jumped 3 dress sizes since being diagnosed with fibro 18 years ago, yes you are right losing weight is a nightmare, gaining pounds very easy, at first I blamed medications, I have discovered that pregab and gabapent are weight gainers for some and steroids another.. Cant, have it both ways my g.p said- I wonder what my Rheumo doc will say In jan when i seen him not seen him for 3 years. I am hoping he will agree to hydrotherapy again as that kept me stable both weight and muscles, not had nay since May this year..|However I do believe thyroid problems can be a weight problem as can diabetes so do ask you g.p for some bloods done to eliminate

Hi there, yes i have been finding it difficult to lose weight, if anything i think ive put on weight even though i eat well and exercise! I think headaches may be a symptom of fibro but check with your doctor. I don’t believe nose bleeds are, how long are they lasting? And are they heavy?

Yes i've been finding exactly the same Sandy1212 , can't lose weight but it goes on so easily. I'd say they last only about 5 mins. Sometimes they're not heavy, just a little bit of blood, and other times it'll be dripping down my face

I am going to my rheum appointment tomorrow and im going to ask about the weight gain, i could let you know what they say if you like? For your nosebleeds it might be worth getting a blood test of your full blood count to check your platelets which what helps you clot x

Nose bleeds to my knowledge are not part of fibro. My son as a small child often suffered with nose bleeds. He became anemic because of it and had to have a large vein in his no cortorised. You really should go back and speak with your GP xx

Thanks Dizzytwo , from researching I hadn't found anywhere that said nose bleeds were linked. I am already anaemic, and have been since I was about 14 (the gp has never been able to find an explanation for this). I just find it unusual that I have started having nose bleeds in my 20s, when I never had them as a child

Just to add a few points, to show you are not alone. I have had Fybro for 17yrs now plus probs with the thyroid some 5yrs later. I too had a massive weight gain and altho' I did tons of easy exercise, I did not loose more than a few pounds. The thyroid was mainly to blame, but Gaber also had a large part to play too. My doctor agreed that I could come off of those and went on a different drug to help with the Fybro pain.

During the past 4yrs the nose bleeds came on for no apparent reason. nothing to do with my illness said the doctor. I then became very anaemic and had to have Iron infusions every 2weeks. until I was good to go. Just as I was thinking, things couldn't get any worse. I started to get a lot of pain in my right knee and upper thigh muscle. After about 6 months i'd had enough and went to see doc again and was sent straight up the hospital for xrays and a scan. Turned out the hip had given up on me , so had to have total hip replacement, This meant more weight gain.

A year later and I am 2 1/2 stone heavier than I was originally. I can get out and about with walking aid, for which I am eternally grateful for, So, if in doubt, do go and see GP.

Good Luck. xx

I’d get your blood pressure checked out, headaches and nosebleeds could be sign that it’s a bit higher than it should be.

MariLiz I had my blood pressure taken a couple of weeks ago when I got my contraceptive pill repeat prescription, it was in the normal range so unfortunately that's not it
