I had the doc out today as I couldn't make it to surgery. I've also got sciatica. I'm just getting over the Australian flu. Does anyone know if it's safe to take gabapentin with pre gablin

I'm no expert but don't you get pregablin because you can't take gabapentin ? Or I'm heard from people who can take one but not the other ..xx

Normally it is one or the other. I have been in Pregablin for quite a few years and it has helped the shooting, burning pains. Some people find one suits them but the other doesn't. Hope you soon make a recovery from the Aussie flu.x

Hi there,

since both these drugs are Anti Epileptics and are used “off label” for Neuropathic Pain, I should think that you would use one or the other.

Best to ask the Dr. who prescribed them.

GP. 😊😊

Hi, from what I have read These medications should not be taken during pregnancy. Pregabalin and Gabapentin don't affect a chemical called Serotonin in the brain, so can be used together with other neuropathic pain medications like amitriptyline or duloxetine.

But if your unsure please check it out with your GP or your local chemist.

I am presuming this is what your doctor has prescribed for you so I would think he/she would be ok with you taking it. But it never hurts to check it out :)

I don’t believe you should ordinarily take them together unless you are being titrated off one and onto the other, under the supervision of your doctor. Best to give your doctor a ring or call 111 just to check. Best be safe than sorry.

Dotpot please do not give Medical advice - it is dangerous. She should get with a doctor. Have you spent six years at medical school and fifteen years training? No, I didn’t think so.

I thought it was one or the other. Are you sure cheerychick that you have been told to take both ?

No dee I had some gabapentin left and I didn't think much of them I came off all meds as I wasn't getting any relief but being so unwell there the doc gave me pre gablin I was still sore after taking the pre gablin I wondered if taking both would help. X

as they are both similar drugs (pregabalin is the newer version) - then as far as I know you either take one or the other. I know when I changed from gabapentin to pregabalin - i had to completely stop before I started taking the pregabalin. xxx

Thank you angelstar. I'm on 50mg of pre gablin but it's not enough I'm still in a lot of pain that's why I was wondering if I could take both . Sending big hugs and best wishes x

I couldn't take gabapentin so I'm now in Pregabalin instead as they didn't make me ill.

What dose are you on? Perhaps you're not on a high enough dose yet as they usually start you off on 150mg a day and if you're ok on that after a couple of weeks or so they'll put you up to 300mg a day, then you should actually start feeling them work. I've actually lost weight since I've been on them and as I also have underactive thyroid it's been impossible for me to lose weight for years, so I'm not complaining! lol

Seriously though, everyone is different and some meds will suit one but not another. Until you try them you don't know.

They have started me on 50mg pre gablin. I was on gabapentin 300mg but they did nothing for me . So have you lost weight on the pre gablin? I'm very pleased for you as I am the same I find it hard to lose weight too. And I've had 3 bouts of steroids last year and I've pit a lot of weight on. I'm now trying my best to lose it . Thanks for your advice . I hope your as well as can be. X

Yes, I've lost weight since I've been on Pregabalin, I've lost 1 stone 4lbs in a month. I tried everything over the years to lose weight and nothing worked. It would go on so easily but just wouldn't come off again.

Some people lose weight on Pregabalin and some put it on, I thought and expected to be one of those who put it on, but for a change I've been lucky and lost it.

50mg isn't high at all, it's just a starter dose, it's that 50mg twice a day? My doc started me on 75mg twice a day but that didn't help at all, so ager 3 weeks I went back and moraine, told them I was still in pain and wouldn't put up with it any longer, so they put me up to 150mg twice a day and that's helped once it got into my system, about 2 weeks. You can have higher doses than that to if you need it. Don't put up with it if the side effects of the Pregabalin are OK, ask for a decent dose that will actually work. Good luck. 🍀 😊
