Stomach pain.

Hi...I noticed that a lot of folk with fibro are also suffering stomach pain and/or nausea. A few weeks ago I was very ill with kidney infection..hospitalised...4 courses antibiotics. This caused thrush in my mouth and throat as always. So this time I stocked up on probiotic drinks. I have taking them for about 4 weeks and am now convinced they actually make me ill. Every morning I wake to nausea and dreadful tummy ache. I have to do poos 3-5 times a day and the pain in my belly before and during is truly awful. Today I thought I would google the subject and shocked at the number of people suffering the same thing. I have binned my probiotic drinks and would never use them again. I honestly felt so bad I was worried my kidneys were bad again..even wondered about bowel cancer. Its worth anybody here checking this out. Have a positive day whatever happens.

Hi there Dolly1954 Sometimes it's the so called health food and drinks that end up making me feel ill too. Just because something is classed as been good for us does not mean our system can tolerate it. I hope your tummy is now settling back down xx

I started taking them as Insufferable with IBS. They don't suit me either neither does yoghourt which they are always telling us to eat although I am fine with milk so it isn't dairy intolerance. I have tried the drinks and also the tablets but find I feel nauseous and more bloated with bad stomach pains so I no longer take them.x

Probiotic drinks are basically fermented milk. They don’t contain enough bacteria or sufficient strains to make a difference. You would need to be drinking around 20 bottles a day. The yogurty fermented milk can upset your stomach, as I found out with one particular strain of homemade Kefir.

I have IBS and have been helped enormously by probiotics. I recommend Optibac For Every Day Probiotics, which contain a wide variety of good bacteria. I’ve found them cheapest on Amazon or sometimes on Dolphin Fitness.

After I came out of hospital after being on IV antibiotics, I took the Optibac 10 day course For Those on Antibiotics.

I’ve read an enormous amount of literature and research supporting the benefits of taking probiotics. Personally, as from helping my IBS, unstable type 2 brittle asthma is now fully under control (2 years now) and a neighbour has had the same results with her son, who is now on probiotics. My functional tremor, which was making life difficult, disappear within a week. I’m definitely biased now!

Dr Rob Knight has given an interesting and entertaining 17 minute TED Talk on why heqlthy gut bacteria are vital. x

Interesting. But I guess everybody is different and can react in different ways. Even drs say what works for one might not work for another. I was ill for weeks with my kidneys..in hospital..4 courses antibiotics inc iv...which as usual gave me terrible thrush. Thank God they give me Fluconazole which sorts it out. I started taking daily probiotic drinks on advice of a friend but its just messed up my stomach. Terrible pain before a bowel movement..nearly as bad as a mild labour pain...a little while after iv been to toilet the pain subsides. However its happening about 3 times a day. Sore bum now which Im dealing with lol! It has to be the probiotics dont agree with me as im not doing anything different. One of my daughters has had Ulcerative Colitis for 15 years but I know her symptoms and its not like that. So im going with the probiotic cause for now. Will probably take a while to get out of my system. Watch this space!!

Think it depends on the blend of bugs. In the past I tried n gave up as feeling sick was so horrid. I've taken tablets since with no such issues n it's helped my tum loads. Think the drinks have lots of sugar and are milk based, both could cause issues.
