I suffer from muscle atrophy because I don't move much and had to lie for 4 months in hispitals. My hands and arms for instance are forming holes where muscles have been. The rest of my body also. My buttock muscles also nothing. Extremely painful to sit or lie down. Any ideas please?

Hello Moytjie , I see that although you have been with HU some time this is your first post on this forum. Welcome to our friendly fibro site where you can find advice, support, help and understanding along with a lighthearted moment or two.

Have you seen our Mother Site fmauk.org ?

Here you will find a wealth of information, including guides and links.

I am wondering if you were given physiotherapy in hospital and if you are able to do some of the exercises at home. It would be worthwhile to contact your doctor to see if hydrotherapy could help you too.

Sometimes you have to be pro- active in your care as it is so easy to slip through the net.

Hope to see you joining in around the form.

Hi Moytjie welcome to our wonderful forum ☺ I'm sorry you are suffering at the moment and that must have been awful for you having go be in hospital for so long, especially if you couldn't move around.

I'm afraid we are not doctors and you don't say if you have been diagnosed with fibro or not but there are different types of Muscle Atrophy, one which is caused by disuse of muscles because of disibility or there is another type which causes nerve damage which would need treat ring. Have you just been told you have MA because of disuse ? If so, you would be refered to physio to help built muscle back up because it can be reversed.. I would definitely get it checked out with GP because he will ask you if you have any other symptoms that can be linked to what it is that's causing this pain for you.

Please go check the mother site for all the info you need 're Fibromyalgia

fmauk.org

Peace. Luv n light

Hi Jan because of disuse. Our fisio therapists here are not of much help sadly.

Ok well that's not so bad because it means it can be rebuilt. You can refer yourself for physio now, so maybe if where you have been, there is somewhere else you could go, have a look at hospitals in your area perhaps because I have 2 places I can go. I'm really surprised your gp haven't refered you to have hydrotherapy or something to help you build it back up. I would go back to GP especially as its giving you so much pain. Ask if you can be refered to the pain clinic because they will assess you and they normally make a plan to help you, which does normally include hydrotherapy sessions.

You should see your gp for a physio referral?

Hi Moytjie ,

You're quite rightly concerned about your Muscle Atrophy. If your muscles atrophy beyond a certain point, it becomes not only extremely painful, but it means that they can only be built up again by a specialist team working together I.e. Physio, and a Dietitian to to guide you what to eat to aid muscle growth, and of course a Dr. or Consultant.

I see you're from South Africa, and I know that you have to pay for Medical Treatment there, so you may not be covered with your Medical Aid to pay for this.

There is lots of information on the Internet, often from reputable Physios, showing you how to do excercises for muscles and various other injuries. If you Google "exercises to build up Muscles" and see what comes up.

It concerns me somewhat that you have been in hospital for such a long time and this has been allowed to happen. I should definitely speak to your usual Dr. and insist that he/she advises you about the way forward.

Wishing you well.

GP. 🙂
