Volunteer work

I sent a message a few days ago about volunteering. I have left the community centre where I was volunteering. This was quite a big decision for me, but as it was having a bad affect on my health and wellbeing I thought it is time for a change. Volunteering is a good way to help gain confidence and improve self esteem but when it is having a bad affect it is time to leave. I have decided to spend some time doing what I enjoy, ie. walking, photography and reading. I have also spoken to my parents about spending more time with them. They are getting older and I dont want to get to a stage where it is too late to be with them. We have to get our priorities straight in life.

Look after yourselves.

David

Hi David

I know that this was a huge decision for you.

Personally I think you have made the right decision. As you say when anything starts to affect your already ill health it is best to walk away.

Enjoy spending time with your parents. As you say they are not around forever and having regrets is awful.

Wishing you much peace

Hi David

I know the decision to leave was troubling you, but I think you have made the right choice.

Taking time out to do the things you feel you enjoy most is good for your mental health as well as physical well being.

I feel sure your parents will enjoy your company and you won't feel so rushed trying to fit everything in.

I think you are definitely getting your priorities right.

All Best Wishes

X

Big decision, but not made in haste. You have to put your needs first and protect your health as much as possible, and making your parents a priority at this stage in your life, you will all benefit. :) xx

I am glad to hear this David, as you wasn't treated very well by one member. Enjoy your new found hobbies and time with your parents. Take care.

That is wonderful news as with be decision you have eliminated a great deal of stress and source of unhappiness in your life and replacing them with very positive things. I don't think you will regret the extra time spent with your parents and I am sure they will really appreciate it. Enjoying your hobbies with not not feed your brain with good things but as walking is the be if them will also make you physically stronger. Best of luck with everything.x

What a good decision David well done. I used to do voluntary work but often found it demanding, I woke up one morning and decided to give it all up and try to concentrate and things I enjoyed more. It is a challenge to fill your time but hope you find lots to do. My only regret is I have nobody to walk with and not driving makes it difficult to join rambling associations, people can get iffy about giving you lifts sometimes and that can take the enjoyment away. Communing with nature is very good for depression and the soul, I wish you well.

Hi Joyla, I have stopped driving completely too due to the fibro making me so tired, dizzy etc. so I decided to stop. I applied for a disabled persons bus pass and I was told yesterday that I have been allowed to have one. This has given me more independance. The buses on the Isle Of Wight are expensive! I am planning a few days out and walking routes. Doing things we enjoy is so important. I still do a bit of voluntary work but not as much as I used to do. Take care.

Thank you for the update. That sounds like a wonderful idea. You have spent so much time helping others, helping yourself now is the best thing. I think we all need to remember to focus on things we enjoy. Sometimes my days are so busy with my taking care of my health and my kids and my chores, I lose handle on the fun of it all and my hobbies. Life really does go by quickly and we must live while we can.

Have fun with your new freedom.

Take care××
